2 October 2026

We’re removing the Ruthven Street, Macleod level crossing by building a rail bridge over the road. Removing the level crossing will improve safety, reduce congestion and deliver more reliable travel times. Construction to build the new rail bridge will start soon.

We're also building a new walking and cycling path along Ellesmere Parade from Ruthven Street to Davies Street. With this brand new connection, locals will be able to enjoy over 2km of safe off-road walking and cycling paths from Macleod to Rosanna.

To build the new rail bridge over Ruthven Street, we are setting up our main construction support area on Macleod Park oval. Construction will begin later this year with the boom gates going and trains travelling on the new bridge in 2027.

We're working closely with Macleod Junior Football Club, Macleod Cricket Club and Banyule City Council to support the clubs to train and play at other local grounds, including Macleod College during construction.

We'll upgrade the Macleod College oval to provide additional and improved recreation space during construction and beyond. Works will start on Tuesday 13 October and continue until early 2027.

Once works are complete, there will be improved recreational space for students to use during school hours and for sporting clubs and community organisations to use after school hours and on weekends.

What we’re doing

  • Upgrading Macleod College oval by installing new drainage and irrigation systems and laying a new natural turf AFL/cricket playing surface and cricket pitch.
  • Installing new lighting, goal posts and player shelters
  • Building a modern, multi-use classroom with bathrooms and change room facilities on the south eastern boundary of the oval. Please see map below.
  • Installing a new path from Strathallan Road to the new multi-use classroom and sports building.

What to expect

  • Macleod College oval closed to the community during construction
  • Construction equipment and machinery including excavators, dozers, rollers, mobile cranes and trucks
  • Construction vehicles and machinery accessing the Macleod College oval from Melrose Avenue and along Somers Avenue
  • Increased noise, dust, and vibration. Water carts will be used to mitigate dust.
  • Works will take place during standard construction hours, 7am to 6pm, Monday to Friday.

We’ll make every effort to complete works on schedule; however, dates and times are subject to change.
