We’re removing the Ruthven Street, Macleod level crossing by building a rail bridge over the road. Removing the level crossing will improve safety, reduce congestion and deliver more reliable travel times. Construction to build the new rail bridge will start soon.

We’re installing ground support for the rail bridge, underground services and continuing site establishment at Macleod Park oval in October.

Metro Trains will complete maintenance works within the rail corridor from 9pm, Friday 2 October to 4am, Monday 5 October between Heidelberg and Hurstbridge and 9pm, Friday 16 October to 4am, Monday 19 October between Clifton Hill and Macleod.

We'll also work along the rail corridor 24 hours a day from 9pm, Friday 23 October to 3am, Monday 26 October between Invermay Grove and Powley Parade.

What we’re doing

• Piling foundations for the new rail bridge and rail power infrastructure
• Installing underground services, overhead wiring and signalling
• Working on Ruthven and Chapman streets to enable site establishment at Macleod Park oval
• Service location works in Rosanna Station car park
• On behalf of the project, Metro Trains will be trimming overhanging branches along the rail corridor and in the station precinct and will remove one tree in decline in Rosanna Parklands during their routine maintenance and renewal works while trains aren’t running in early October. This will enable construction of the new rail bridge and new rail infrastructure.

What to expect

• Buses replace trains betweenHeidelberg and Hurstbridge from 8.30pm, Friday 2 October to last service, Sunday 4 October and between Parliament and Macleod from 8.15pm, Friday 16 October to last service, Sunday 18 October.
• Project night works from 9pm, Friday 23 October to 3am, Monday 26 October. Buses replace trains betweenHeidelberg and Greensborough from 8.30pm Friday 23 October to last service Sunday 25 October.
• Road, lane and car park closures.
• Increased noise, dust, light and construction vehicles. Water carts will be used to mitigate dust.

We’ll make every effort to complete works on schedule; however, dates and times are subject to change.

Directly impacted residents will be notified in advance.

Changes to the way you travel

Road

• Ruthven and Chapman streets closed at the level crossing (between McNamara Street and Thomson Drive) from 8.30pm, Friday 23 October to 5am, Monday 26 October.
• Ellesmere Parade access onto Ruthven Street closed from 8.30pm, Friday 23 October to 5am, Monday 26 October.
• Chapman Street temporary traffic delays of up to 5 minutes for construction vehicle access to Macleod Park oval until late 2027.

Parking

• Macleod Park oval car park intermittent closures until late 2027.
• Macleod Station car park closed from 10pm, Thursday 22 October to 3am, Monday 26 October.

Pedestrian and cycling

• Macleod Park oval closed until late 2027.
• Davies Street pedestrian level crossing closed between Ellesmere Parade and Rosanna Parklands 7am to 5pm, on Tuesday 6 October.  Accessible shuttle bus in place, see map below.
• Macleod Station from 10pm, Thursday 22 October to 3am, Monday 26 October:
  • access ramp changes
  • up to 6 bike hoops closed
• Ruthven Street level crossing northern pedestrian path closed from 9pm, Friday 23 October to 3am, Monday 26 October.
• Ruthven Street level crossing southern pedestrian path stop and holds from 9pm, Friday 23 October to 3am, Monday 26 October.

Rail

• Hurstbridge Line buses replace trains between Heidelberg and Hurstbridge from 8.30pm, Friday 2 October to last service, Sunday 4 October.
• Hurstbridge Line buses replace trains between Parliament and Macleod from 8.15pm, Friday 16 October to last service, Sunday 18 October.
• Hurstbridge Line buses replace trains between Heidelberg and Greensborough from 8.30pm, Friday 23 October to last service, Sunday 25 October.
