We’re removing the dangerous and congested Ruthven Street, Macleod level crossing by building a rail bridge over the road. Removing the level crossing will improve safety, reduce congestion and deliver more reliable travel times. Construction to build the new rail bridge will start soon.

We’re setting up our main construction support area on Macleod Park oval from Monday 21 September. We'll use this area until construction is complete in mid 2027.

By having equipment, machinery, vehicles, and construction materials close to the project minimises the length and impact of disruptions for the whole community. This includes less trucks on local roads and shorter disruptions for passengers on the Hurstbridge Line.

After construction we’ll upgrade the oval with new drainage and irrigation systems, natural turf and a new cricket pitch, with works expected to be completed in late 2027.

Jemena is also continuing works to relocate power lines between Macleod Park oval and Chapman Street in late September and early October. Please see map below.

What we’re doing

What to expect

• Macleod Park oval closed until late 2027 with intermittent car park closures.
• Work crews, machinery and construction vehicles accessing Macleod Park oval. Traffic delays of up to 5 minutes on Chapman Street.
• Road and lane closures on McNamara and Chapman streets.
• Increase in noise, dust and vibration, with dust minimised by water carts.
• Traffic management and signage. Please follow traffic management and signage in place.

Works will be completed during normal construction hours from 7am to 6pm, Monday to Friday and 7am to 1pm, Saturdays. We’ll make every effort to complete works on schedule; however, dates and times are subject to change.

Changes to the way you travel

Road

• Macleod Park oval temporary traffic delays of up to 5 minutes on Chapman Street for construction vehicle access to the oval from 7am, Monday 21 September until late 2027.
• Chapman Street road and lane closures between the level crossing and Thomson Drive from late September to early October, 9am to 3.30pm each day. Detours in place. Please follow signage.
• McNamara Street lane closures between Ruthven Street and Dunstan Street for North East Link project utilities works from late September to early October, 9am to 3.30pm each day. Detours in place. Please follow signage.

Car parking

• Macleod Park Oval car park
  • closed from 7am, Wednesday 16 September to 5pm, Friday 18 September.
  • closed at times until late 2027.

Walking and cycling

• Macleod Park oval closed from 7am, Monday 21 September until late 2027.
