We’ve closed the level crossing at Cave Hill Road, Lilydale and built a new pedestrian underpass to provide a safer connection across the rail line with links to future pedestrian and cycling paths.

The major construction works at the Cave Hill Level Crossing Removal Project (the Project) are now finished in your area and we are continuing with works to complete the project.

During the upcoming September/October school holidays, some 24 hour finishing works will take place within the rail corridor, close to the Cave Hill Road underpass from 9pm, Friday 19 September to 5am, Monday 22 September 2025, while trains aren’t running.

In addition to these night works, the pedestrian underpass at Cave Hill Road will be closed to safely carry out rectification works from 7am, Saturday 20 September to 6pm, Thursday 25 September inclusive. The community are encouraged to seek an alternative route during this time and please allow extra time for your journey.

Works taking place in September 2025

Rail corridor near the Cave Hill Road underpass

• From 9pm, Friday 19 September to 5am, Monday 22 September there will be 24-hour works within the rail corridor each day and night.
  • Some moderate noise and light spill from temporary light towers.

Cave Hill Road underpass

• From 7am, Saturday 20 September to 6pm, Thursday 25 September the pedestrian underpass at Cave Hill Road, Lilydale will be closed for rectification works.
  • Full closure of the pedestrian underpass during this time with day works only.
  • The community are encouraged to seek an alternative route during this time.

What to expect

• There will be some changes to the way you travel around the area while we work. Please take care when moving around the works areas.
• Please seek an alternative route during the pedestrian underpass closure at Cave Hill Road. Please allow extra time for your journey.
• You may experience some noise from machinery and light from temporary lighting towers.
