Works underway on Croydon Transport Hub

We’re removing the dangerous and congested level crossing at Coolstore Road, Croydon, and building a new transport hub, which will connect Croydon's town centre.

Works have started on the new transport hub, which will make it easier to get where you need to go and provide a modern and safe Croydon Station precinct.

As part of the project, we're building new road connections to replace the congested level crossing and roundabout at Coolstore Road. This will connect Croydon's retail precincts and create more options for all transport users to cross the rail line.

Work crews have been busy relocating and upgrading underground utilities and fencing off work zones to ensure locals can move safely through the area while we work.

Piling works have begun to install concrete foundations for the rail bridge.

Major works will finish in 2025, when the new Croydon transport hub is open and the Lilydale Line is level crossing free.

What's next?

We're starting to build the vertical columns that will support the elevated bridge structure.

We'll work 24/7 from Wednesday 9 August to Wednesday 16 August, to safely complete critical works to prepare for major construction.

Buses will replace trains between Blackburn and Lilydale from 8.30pm Wednesday 9 August to last service Tuesday 15 August.

Coolstore Road will also be closed at the level crossing from 7.30pm Wednesday 9 August to 7am Wednesday 16 August.

Why this level crossing needs to go

  • More than 10,000 vehicles travel over this road each day
  • Removing this level crossing will connect the Croydon precinct, which is currently divided by the rail line
  • With the boom gates gone, we can create safer and more efficient road connections for Croydon
  • More than 100 trains pass through the level crossing every week day.

How to get around during construction

While we remove the level crossing and build the new Croydon transport hub, there will be some changes to the way you travel through the area.

Buses will replace trains from 8.30pm on Wednesday 9 August to last service Tuesday 15 August, while crews work around the clock to safely complete critical utility and piling works. For more information and to plan your journey visit the PTV website.

Coolstore Road will also be closed at the level crossing during these times. Detour routes will be in place and access to local businesses and residents will be maintained.

Temporary changes to traffic conditions are essential to keep our workforce and the public safe. Please take care and allow a little extra time when moving around the area.

Meet Thomas, a proud Croydon local

Thomas from Croydon's SLG

Thomas is a passionate Croydon local and public transport user and is looking forward to the transformation of Croydon's town centre and a safer transport hub.

Local student, Thomas, had a strong interest in history, geography, and railways from an early age. For him, Victoria's railways are not just an interest but a passion that has led him to volunteering at the Healesville Railway.

'I have always been interested in trains; my grandfather is a railways enthusiast… [The railways are] a wonderful way of serving the community, it’s a service we can rely on.’

As the youngest member of the Coolstore Road Construction Liaison Group (CLG), Thomas is enthusiastic about the positive changes the new transport hub will bring to Croydon.

'A significant issue is the separated bus interchange, it can be very stressful… connectivity, accessibility and safety are pretty poor with the current station. Connecting the bus interchange will make the area a lot safer.'

Thomas says he also has a keen interest in keeping Croydon’s youth engaged in the project as works get underway.

'A lot of young people feel that their voices are not heard, because they do not know how to reach out and how to leave their feedback. Telling young people that their voices matter… is the biggest step to getting youth engagement.'

'At the moment the way that the railway works is that there are only two places that you can cross it, Croydon really is divided. I think that this project is an amazing opportunity to connect the heart of Croydon.'

LXRP Program Director Steve Brown said he was pleased that Thomas was involved in the CLG. 'It’s great to see that Thomas is passionate about our project and the changes it will bring to Croydon and I know the project and the community will benefit from Thomas’s contribution on the CLG.’
