2 March 2023

We’re building a new Croydon Transport Hub, which will make it easier to get where you need to go and provide a modern and safe Croydon Station precinct.

We're building new road connections to replace the congested level crossing and roundabout, connecting Croydon's retail precincts and creating more open space across the rail line for all transport users.

Works will start in autumn 2023 and will finish in 2025, making the Lilydale Line level crossing free.

As part of the new transport hub, there will be changes to the way you travel around the centre of Croydon. This road layout will provide safer and more intuitive journeys for drivers. It will also create better links for pedestrians and cyclists.

Why this level crossing needs to go

  • More than 10,000 vehicles travel over this road each day.
  • Removing this level crossing will connect the Croydon precinct, which is currently divided by the rail line.
  • With the boom gates gone, we can create safer and more efficient road connections for Croydon.
  • More than 100 trains pass through the level crossing every week day.

Getting around your new Croydon Transport Hub

Helping you find a car park

In our community feedback, you told us that maintaining parking was important. We're retaining the same number of station car parks at Croydon, with parking fitted under the rail bridge to save space.

Replacing the roundabout with streamlined connections

During consultation the community said they found the existing roundabout confusing, dangerous and congested. We’re replacing the roundabout with a new signalised intersection, which will provide safer and more direct links between Wicklow Avenue, Croydon Road, Kent Avenue and Lacey Street.

Your new Main Street intersection

We’re removing the dangerous level crossing on Coolstore Road and redirecting that road to provide a clear connection into Main Street.

A new connection for Devon Street

We’re building a new connection from Devon Street onto Wicklow Avenue. This new intersection will allow for all traffic movements out of Devon Street, giving you more options to get around the area.

Your new walking and cycling connections

You told us you wanted more walking and cycling connections for Croydon. We’re building cycling paths, walking paths and shared use paths throughout the precinct. These paths will make it easier and safer for pedestrians and cyclists to move through the area to access local shops, schools and different modes of public transport.

Managing road disruptions

To create these new connections, there will be times when we need to close some car parking, lanes and roads.

We give advanced notice to residents, traders and commuters before any disruptions occur. Access to homes and businesses will be maintained at all times.

Some of the ways we communicate disruptions include:

  • weekly works alert letters that are delivered to your letterbox, and available online
  • regular doorknocks
  • email updates
  • the disruptions page on our website
  • our SMS alert service
  • radio and newspaper advertising for major disruptions.

If you would like to stay up to date with the latest information on upcoming road and rail disruptions, you can sign up to receive our SMS alerts. Simply text the word Coolstore to 0438 942 094 to sign up to alerts for the Coolstore Road Level Crossing Removal Project.
