20 March 2024

Work is powering ahead to make the Lilydale Line level crossing free by 2024, a year ahead of schedule.

Construction is well underway to remove the congested level crossing and roundabout by elevating the rail line, building a new Croydon Station and transport hub, and creating new road links to connect Croydon’s town centre.

What we're doing

From Thursday 4 April we’ll commence major works to construct the new road connection between Kent Avenue and Lacey Street.

To minimise disruption to the community, these works are being undertaken in 2 stages and will involve relocating existing drainage, installing the new underground cables for traffic signals and public light services and constructing the new road surfaces. While these works are carried out, pedestrian access to businesses will be maintained and traffic will be maintained one way (in an easterly direction) on Main Street near the construction area.

Works will take place as follows:

Stage One:

From Thursday 4 April until late April there will be a full closure of the westbound lane on Main Street and a full closure of Lacey Street between Main Street and the Lacey Street car park entrances (please see map below).

During this period there will also be a full closure of Main Street overnight on Thursday 4 April, Friday 5 April and Monday 8 April to Friday 12 April to minimise disruption to businesses.

One entry access point to the Croydon Traders Permit Parking on Lacey Street (adjacent to Harry Lacey Lane) will be temporarily closed however 2 alternative entrances will remain open. In addition, 1 entry access point to the 3 hour customer car park (adjacent to Thomas Brew Lane) will also be temporarily closed, however alternative entry and exit points will remain open on Lacey Street and Hewish Road.

Stage Two:

From late April until mid-May, the eastbound lane on Main Street will be closed between the pedestrian crossing adjacent to 68 Main Street and the Vinnies Shop (please see map below). Traffic will continue to flow in an eastbound direction during this period using the westbound lane. Car parking spaces will be closed adjacent to 57 and 61 Main Street and also adjacent to Vinnies.

What to expect

  • Barriers will be placed around the work zones on Main Street and Lacey Street to create a safe space for crews to undertake the work.
  • Pedestrian access may change throughout the works. Access changes will be clearly communicated via directional signage and traffic management staff during working hours. For your safety, please observe signage and directions from traffic control staff.
  • During stage one, there will be changes to the way road users access the car parking areas on Lacey Street, however access to these parking areas will be maintained.
  • During stage two, up to 12 car spaces will be closed on Main Street between 57 and 61 Main Street. Vehicles will still be able to move through the area in a one-way traffic arrangement.
  • A vehicle detour will be in place during both stages (please see map below).
  • Pedestrian access will be maintained to and from Main Street and Lacey Street businesses during this period.
  • Traffic management staff will be in place throughout the works to ensure the safety of road users and pedestrians.
  • Stage one and stage two road closures will be in place day and night.
  • There will be an increase in construction activity including noise, vibration and vehicle movements.

When we'll work

Most works will take place during the standard construction hours of 7am to 6pm, Monday to Friday, and 7am to 3pm, Saturdays. To minimise disruption to businesses, works requiring a full closure of Main Street will take place at night during the hours of 7pm to 5am.

Please be aware works can sometimes take longer than expected or need to be rescheduled due to weather and other factors outside of our control. The road closures will remain in place day and night for the duration of each closure.
