5 March 2024

Work is powering ahead to make the Lilydale Line level crossing free by 2024, a year ahead of schedule.

Construction is well underway to remove the congested level crossing and roundabout by elevating the rail line, building a new Croydon Station and transport hub, and creating new road links to connect Croydon’s town centre.

What we’re doing

As part of the works to remove the level crossing at Coolstore Road, we will be required to build a new rail access point to replace the existing access point at the level crossing on Lincoln Road, near the corner of Dorset Road. This is called a Road-Rail Vehicle (RRV) access pad. RRV access pads are an asphalted point along the rail corridor used by work crews to safely drive vehicles and machinery directly onto the track for Metro Trains Melbourne routine maintenance and renewal works.

A gate will be installed to allow work crews to access the RRV access pad. We also need to undertake works to relocate the rail signalling and underground power and equipment, known as the Combined Service Route (CSR). These strategically located pads provide critical access to the network and can be used at any time for emergency or planned works.

We’ll start to set up a worksite adjacent to the rail corridor near Lincoln Road service road from Tuesday 19 March. We’ll then commence works to relocate the CSR, some utility services and prepare the area for the construction of the RRV access pad, which will continue over the coming months.

What to expect

From Tuesday 19 March vegetation removal, excavation and trenching work will take place adjacent to the rail corridor.

During this time:

  • Barriers and temporary fencing will be placed around the work zone to create a safe space for crews to undertake the work.
  • Vegetation will be removed adjacent to the work zone. Initially three trees will be removed, however further tree removal will need to take place – residents will be advised in advance of this work. We understand trees are important to the community and will work hard to minimise the impact of our works as much as possible.
  • Service investigation works such non-destructive digging will be undertaken.
  • Trenching and excavation will be undertaken as part of work to relocate the CSR.
  • Site preparation works to commence construction of the RRV pad.
  • There will be an increase in construction activity including noise, vibration and vehicle movements.

When we’ll work

These works will take place during the standard construction hours of 7am to 6pm Monday to Friday, and 7am to 3pm Saturdays. Please be aware works can sometimes take longer than expected or need to be rescheduled due to weather and other factors outside of our control.
