Final designs of your new Keon Parade Station
As part of the Victorian Government’s commitment to remove 85 level crossings by 2025, we’re removing the level crossing at Keon Parade and we’re building a brand-new Keon Park Station.
Final designs of the vibrant and modern Keon Park Station and new elevated rail bridge that will remove the dangerous and congested at Keon Parade are now available.
The new designs incorporate community feedback and we'll deliver an architecturally-designed station with a landscaped forecourt, elevated platforms with access via lifts and stairs, shelter and lighting, CCTV, a secure Parkiteer bicycle storage, and walking and cycling paths through the precinct.
In the new location on the south side of Keon Parade, the station will have better connections between bus and train services, expansive landscaping including a picnic area and new connections from High Street through to Johnson Street shops and eateries, JC Donath Reserve and across High Street.
Early works will kick off in the coming months, with construction ramping up next year. In 2025 trains will run on the new rail bridge to the new Keon Park Station – making Keon Parade boom gate free.
The Keon Parade Level Crossing Removal Project is part of an ongoing investment to upgrade the Mernda Line including removing six level crossings and building seven new stations.
Why this level crossing needs to go
- More than 18,000 vehicles travel through the level crossing each weekday
- Boom gates are down for up to 41 minutes during morning peak (7am to 9am)
- 30 trains travel through the crossing during morning peak (7am to 9am)
- One serious crash and 24 near misses in the past nine years
- 33,000 passengers use the Mernda line each day
Your new Keon Park Station coming in 2025
In September, we heard from Reservoir and Thomastown locals that you wanted a station that reflects the local area with improved safety and security and better connections between trains and buses. The final designs of your new Keon Park Station precinct reflects this community feedback.
Better connections
- We heard that creating convenient and safer connections between trains and buses is important to you.
- We’re relocating the bus stops on Keon Parade and Hughes Parade closer to the station.
- We’re adding a signalised pedestrian crossing across High Street at the intersection of Hughes Parade, which will provide direct, safer access to the station.
- We’ve also improving the signalised pedestrian crossing on Keon Parade, to make it easier and safer for passengers to get to the station.
The station precinct will connect from High Street through to Johnson Street via a new pedestrian and cycling path, making it easier to catch the train.
With a Parkiteer secure bike storage and new shared walking and cycling paths in and around the station precinct it will be easier for locals to walk and cycle to the station.
Landscaping
Your feedback showed a strong preference for landscaping using native and indigenous species.
We’ve incorporated this feedback into the landscaping plan, using shrubs, plants and trees providing a green gateway to the new station.
Station features
When the new station opens, passengers will enjoy modern, accessible station facilities, including a generous forecourt and gathering spaces.
With entrances off Keon Parade and south off High Street, passengers will access the new elevated platform by two lifts or two sets of stairs. The station will also include new myki facilities and an office for Protective Services Officers.
Based on your feedback we’ve increased the number of seats in the forecourt, which will be made of natural timber materials.
The new station forecourt will feature landscaped areas between the new station, High Street and Keon Parade with planting, seating and greenery for locals and passengers to enjoy.
Safety and parking
We heard you want a safer station, particularly at night and we’re delivering. The new station will feature CCTV throughout, more lighting and easily accessible car parks.
The new car park off High Street will have more than 100 spaces, accessible spaces and a pick-up and drop-off zone.
The car park off Keon Parade will have more than 60 spaces. An improved signalised pedestrian crossing on Keon Parade will ensure passengers can cross the street to the station safely and conveniently.
New picnic area
We heard that creating a picnic space that you can enjoy with family and friends is a priority. The new station precinct will feature a picnic area near JC Donath Reserve.
