Major works underway
The Victorian Government is removing 17 dangerous level crossings, including the one at Clyde Road, as part of a $16 billion investment to upgrade the Pakenham line that will improve safety, reduce congestion and allow more trains to run more often.
Major works are underway to remove the Clyde Road, Berwick level crossing by building a road underpass, improving safety and traffic flow, while creating better local connections to the nearby residential, health and education precincts.
During the recent closure of the Pakenham line and Clyde Road, we carried out critical foundation works for the new rail bridge and road underpass.
A new bus interchange is being built at Berwick Station, improving accessibility, allowing more services to run, and creating comfortable areas to wait for public transport all year round.
New walking and cycling connections will create safer and easier access to public transport, local businesses and areas of interest.
Berwick’s new and improved road network, safer walking and cycling connections, and upgraded bus interchange will be ready next year.
Project features
- More reliable travel times
- Safer and easier walking and cycling connections
- New bus interchange at Berwick Station
- Supporting the local economy and jobs
What's been happening
Thank you for your patience during the recent week-long construction blitz. Our crews worked around the clock, laying foundations for the new road underpass.
We used more than 308 cubic metres of concrete, plus 35 tonnes of reinforced steel to lay foundations for the new rail bridge. Piling works will continue throughout the year with more than 300 piles drilled to support the new Clyde Road underpass and rail bridge.
The right turn lane into Reserve Street is now permanently closed to traffic, except for local buses. This change maintains the safety of the local road network during construction and after the new road underpass opens. A new signalised U-turn at Gibb Street will provide safe access into Reserve Street in the coming months.
Prepping the Pakenham line
We worked 24/7 at the Clyde Road level crossing while trains weren’t running on the Pakenham line.
Forming foundations
Three piling rigs strengthened the ground for the new rail bridge across Clyde Road.
Machines in motion
Works continue throughout the year to drill more than 300 piles to support the new road underpass.
Digging deep
We drilled 15 piles, up to 29m deep, filled with concrete and reinforced steel.
What's coming up
Over the coming months, drainage will be installed under Clyde Road to prevent the new road underpass from flooding.
We'll dig trenches as deep as 6m and lower micro tunnelling equipment into the ground. We'll then build a 350m tunnel, about 9m deep, under Clyde Road to install drainage and services.

Building your new bus interchange
Early works, will start soon at Berwick Station to make way for the new bus interchange and upgraded facilities.
Bus services will continue to operate while we work, but there will be changes to car parking at the station as works progress. We'll provide an update ahead of any changes.
Keeping you safe during major construction
We're monitoring traffic conditions closely during major construction and continually reviewing our traffic management plans to keep locals moving safely, while we work.
Independent road safety audits are regularly carried out to ensure the safety of the community and the local road network. We also work closely with stakeholders, including the Department of Transport, local emergency services and other infrastructure projects in the area to share information and help minimise disruptions.

Victoria's Big Build
Works continue this Autumn as part of Victoria’s Big Build to build a better transport network for all Victorians, making it safer and easier to travel around Melbourne.
