Works to start soon and new bus interchange for Berwick Station

Works will soon begin on removing the dangerous and congested Clyde Road level crossing in Berwick, with a road underpass.

The Clyde Road level crossing is one step closer to being removed with the construction contract signed and major works set to start later this year.

The project has also been expanded to upgrade the bus interchange at Berwick Station. These additional works will better integrate the station precinct and provide better connections for commuters. Carrying out these works together will minimise disruption to the local community, road, rail and bus users.

Removing the Clyde Road level crossing will ease congestion for the 22,000 drivers who travel through the crossing every day and improve safety for emergency services, drivers, pedestrians and cyclists.

The level crossing will be gone for good in 2022.

  • 22,000 cars travel through the level crossing each day
  • Boom gates are down for more than 30 per cent of the morning peak
  • Improve access and connections to busy residential, health and education precinct

Project update

Site establishment

Works will continue this month to complete site establishment involving the installation of a site compound, fencing and offices to pave the way for major construction later this year

Early works

Early works such as service relocations, survey works and site investigations are now underway along Clyde Road, Enterprise Avenue, Jane Street , Reserve Street, Gibb Street and Keith Taylor Drive in Berwick.

Berwick Station bus interchange upgrade

The Berwick Station bus interchange will be upgraded and relocated to the south side of the station to make it safer, reduce travel times and enable it to cater for more services to run in the future. The bus interchange upgrade will also benefit local schools and residents with fewer buses travelling along Gloucester Avenue, Reserve Street and other local roads.

Jane Street and Reserve Street access to remain

Following further work on the project design, access to Jane Street will be maintained and access to Reserve Street will remain via a signalised intersection with a right turn out and left turn out movement. We are also maintaining access into Reserve Street via a new u-turn just north of Gibb Street.

These changes in the design will benefit local residents, businesses and emergency services travelling to the nearby medical and education precincts.

What we've done so far

Works to remove the level crossing to date have involved:

  • geotechnical investigations (drilling) to learn about the ground conditions
  • site surveys, including environmental surveys
  • traffic studies
  • determining where the existing service utilities, such as gas, water, electricity, telecommunications and sewerage are located
  • flora and fauna investigations
  • cultural and heritage investigations.

These investigations led to the determination that a road underpass is the best design option for the Clyde Road level crossing removal.

Community feedback has helped shape the design

In May and September 2019 we held several community information sessions and opened our online engagement hub for community comment. Here's how you've helped shape the project:

Safety

You asked us for safer pedestrian and cyclists pathways so we have provided a clearer delineation on the shared use path along the Clyde Road underpass.

Identity

You wanted less concrete in the design so we’ve incorporated more colour through bridge cladding and retaining wall treatments and soft landscaping.

Connectivity and wayfinding

We heard that you wanted better connections, so we’ve reinstated access to Jane Street and Reserve Street and will install a new u-turn just north of Gibb Street.

Share your ideas online

We're seeking community feedback for the open space and community areas we'll be creating around the Berwick Station precinct as well as on aspects of the new bus interchange design.

This input will help us refine the project design.

Feedback closes 5pm Monday 25 May. View the designs and complete the community feedback survey on our online engagement hub.
