We’re making the Pakenham Line level crossing free by 2025, removing 22 dangerous level crossings to improve safety, reduce congestion and run more trains more often.

As part of the Progress Street Level Crossing Removal Project, the new Fowler Road bridge has been completed and the level crossing has been permanently closed.

We have also completed the upgrade and signalisation of the Fowler Road and South Gippsland Highway intersection, providing businesses with safer access to the industrial precinct.

What we’re doing

Construction continues to finalise works on Progress Street, Fowler Road, Hallam Valley Road and South Gippsland Highway. In August and September our works will focus on:

Progress Street

  • Completion of the road surfaces on Progress St, north and south of the rail line from mid August to early September.
  • Decommissioning of the Progress Street site office by late September.

Fowler Road

  • Parking bay, kerb works and signage installation on Fowler Road.
  • Fowler Road temporary carpark driveway reconstruction works occurring between Wednesday 20 August to Saturday, 23 August. Access will be maintained under traffic management.
  • Raising overhead powerlines by United Energy between Sunday 17 August and Monday 18 August. Any impacts to properties will be notified by the service provider.
  • Road profiling, asphalting and line marking on the north side of Fowler Road from late August.

Landscaping

  • As part of site reinstatement, landscaping will occur on Progress Street, Fowler Road and South Gippsland Highway. Lane closures will be in place on South Gippsland Highway from 7.30pm to 5am, Tuesday 2 September to Saturday 6 September. Please follow the direction of traffic management.

What to expect

  • Increased construction personnel, vehicles and equipment in the area.
  • Increased noise, dust and vibration.
  • Access to businesses and driveways may be interrupted at times. We will work closely with businesses to minimise impacts.
  • Traffic management, including lane closures and reduced speed limits at times.
  • General working hours are Monday to Friday, 7am to 6pm and Saturday from 7am to 3pm, with some out of hours works necessary at times.
