We’re making the Pakenham Line level crossing free by 2025, removing 22 dangerous level crossings to improve safety, reduce congestion and run more trains more often.

What we’re doing

As part of the Progress Street Level Crossing Removal Project, works are continuing to build a new road bridge, connecting Progress Street and Fowler Road.

In December, we completed bridge superstructure works, asphalt and retaining wall works. From Tuesday 14 January 2025, we’ll continue works along Fowler Road, Progress Street, Nathan Road and Hallam Valley Road. Works will include:

  • third party service relocations and connections on Fowler Road
  • pit installation and civil works on Fowler Road and Progress Street
  • surveying and service proving, drainage and utility relocation works on Progress Street and Nathan Road
  • temporary footpath construction on the south side of Fowler Road
  • site establishment, surveying, vegetation removal, temporary fencing, traffic signage installation and pavement construction on Hallam Valley Road.

Our general work hours are from 7am to 6pm, Monday to Friday and 7am to 3pm Saturdays, with some out of hours works when required.

What to expect

  • Increased construction activity, noise and vibration.
  • Ongoing temporary road shoulder and lane closures in the area.
  • Parking restrictions and traffic management on parts of Hallam Valley Road and Fowler Road.
  • Third party service relocations and connections on Fowler Road. Impacted businesses will be contacted prior to expected services disruptions.
  • Access to businesses and driveways may be interrupted at times, we will work closely with businesses to minimise impacts.

Traffic management and signage will be in place for the safety of the community and our workforce. Please follow the signs and instructions when travelling around the project area.
