Works will soon begin on removing the dangerous and congested South Gippsland Highway, Dandenong level crossing with a road bridge.

The South Gippsland Highway Level Crossing Removal Project is committed to minimising and managing impacts to local wildlife and protecting the environment.

Our commitment

We carefully consider sustainability and our impact on the environment during the design and construction of our projects.

During construction, we'll implement best practice environmental management measures to ensure we comply with relevant legislation administered by authorities including the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) Victoria and the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning.

Additionally, the project will be assessed using the Infrastructure Sustainability Council of Australia’s rating tool, which independently reviews and scores infrastructure projects in categories such as energy, resource and innovation.

We'll be planting 300 new trees and shrubs as part of the project.

Flora and Fauna

Where we’ll be planting

As part of the project design, we will be planting along the west side of the new road bridge and in the new open space area to the north west of the level crossing.

What we'll be planting

We'll plant native vegetation where possible. Native vegetation is best suited to the local environment and provides shade and habitat for native fauna. Water sensitive urban design will be incorporated in the landscaping design to improve the quality of water entering the drainage system.

Wildlife management

The project will not have any significant impacts on local habitats or fauna species.

What we'll be doing to help the environment

We're dedicated to reducing emissions, saving water and using recycled and sustainable materials. We have a team dedicated to managing our environmental and sustainable practices.

We survey all vegetation in the project area. In doing this, we can ensure that we avoid removing vegetation that has significant environmental and cultural importance.

We will also obtain offsets for any native vegetation removal that is required. Some small trees will need to be removed as part of the project.

Culture and heritage

The Level Crossing Removal Project acknowledges and respects the Traditional Owners of the land, past, present and future. Maintaining Dandenong’s cultural integrity is important to the project, which is why we’ve undertaken cultural heritage assessments.
