Piles of works happening at Station Street, Beaconsfield

As part of the Victorian Governments commitment to remove all 22 level crossings on the Pakenham Line by 2025, we’re removing the level crossing at Station Street, Beaconsfield.

Final designs released

Final designs have been released for the new road bridge and major works are underway.

Crews are continuing to work north and south of the rail corridor to build ground foundations for the new road bridge that will extend over the Pakenham Line.

Over the coming months, you can expect to see more construction vehicles and increased site activity in the area as works ramp up.

Building a road bridge allows us to get rid of the level crossing sooner, improves connections to the Beaconsfield Station precinct, and allows for possible future transport upgrades.

The boom gates at Station Street, Beaconsfield will be gone for good and the new road bridge open in 2025.

Together with the Metro Tunnel, this project will create capacity for an additional 121,000 peak hour passengers every week. It will also give people access to 5 new underground stations in Melbourne’s CBD and surrounds.

Why this level crossing needs to go

  • Boom gates down for 28% of the morning peak
  • 3 near misses and one collision since 2012
  • 25 trains travel through the level crossing during the morning peak

Final designs for Beaconsfield

Two rounds of consultation were held with the local community to provide feedback on the design in October 2022 and March 2023.

We asked the community to share their ideas on the colours and finishes on the road bridge and landscaping in the area.

Here's what we heard:

  • locals enjoyed the village-like atmosphere
  • a desire for pathways on and around the road bridge
  • better connections between the station and local streets
  • infrastructure that blends in with the natural surrounds.

Along with technical investigations, your feedback helped us refine aspects of the project including the look and feel of the road bridge.

What’s coming up?

2024 is shaping up to be a big year for the Station Street, Beaconsfield level crossing removal project as we push ahead with major works to make the entire Pakenham Line boom gate free in 2025.

Here’s what’s coming up:

  • further piling works
  • building temporary foundations across the project for heavy construction machinery to safely enter the site
  • relocating underground services such as water, drainage, power and telecommunications
  • installing retaining walls and bridge beams
  • removal of vegetation along the rail corridor. Any wildlife will be safely rehomed.

Making progress in Beaconsfield

We're preparing to continue piling works on either side of the rail line to build the new road bridge.

What to expect during construction

We’re working closely with the community to inform you of upcoming works and to minimise impacts during construction.

At times, we will temporarily close roads and lanes. Impacted residents will be notified of traffic disruption ahead of schedule.

Kenilworth Avenue works

From Sunday 4 February to Saturday 24 February, there will be further traffic changes on Kenilworth Avenue, between Soldiers Road and Station Street.

Kenilworth Avenue will be closed in both directions.

  • Detour via Bryn Mawr Boulevard, Woods Street and Princes Highway or Brunt Road and Princes Highway

Bus stops located along route 836 will temporarily close (in both directions) along Kenilworth Avenue and Soldiers Road between Station Street and Streeton Way.

  • Alternative bus stops located McCubbin Way/Streeton Way and Beaconsfield Avenue/Beaconsfield Station.
  • Pedestrian footpath along Kenilworth Avenue will be closed.
  • A pedestrian shuttle bus will operate between 5am and 10pm on weekdays and 6am and 10pm on weekends.
