Major works complete at Station Street, Beaconsfield

Major works on the Station Street, Beaconsfield Level Crossing Removal Project are complete, following the opening of McKenna Drive in March 2025.

Removing this level crossing has improved journeys for the 5200 drivers passing through each day and will allow more trains to run in future.

During the past few months, crews worked north and south of the rail line to complete final road, footpath widening, car park, landscaping and lighting works.

In June, we also removed the redundant boom gates from the old level crossing at Station Street.

This marked the 85th level crossing removal, as part of the Victorian government's commitment to remove 110 level crossings by 2030.

Thank you to the local community for your patience throughout this project.

Why this level crossing needs to go

  • 25 trains during the morning peak
  • 3 near misses and one collision since 2012
  • Boom gates down for 28% of the morning peak

Pakenham Line level crossing free in 2025

The removal of this level crossing will help to create a level crossing free Pakenham Line in 2025 which will change how locals live, work and travel.

With no level crossings on the train line, journeys on the Pakenham Line will be faster and local roads safer.

Once the Metro Tunnel opens later this year, more trains will be running on the Pakenham Line more often.

Works to remove the level crossings at Webster Street, Dandenong and Progress Street, Dandenong South are currently underway with the level crossings gone by the end of 2025.

McKenna Drive opens to the public

In late March, we opened the new McKenna Drive road bridge to the public.

The opening of the new bridge over the Pakenham line, connecting Beaconsfield Avenue to Kenilworth Avenue, has improved safety and kept traffic flowing in the Beaconsfield area by separating trains and vehicles.

The project welcomed the McKenna family to help formally open the road bridge.

‘McKenna Drive’ takes the title for the new Beaconsfield road bridge

In November 2024, we consulted with the community to provide feedback on the four proposed names for the new road bridge.

Thank you to everyone who contributed their feedback on the name for the new road bridge. We received an overwhelming amount of positive feedback towards all the proposed names, with McKenna Drive receiving a total of 300 submissions.

A commemorative plaque was installed at the foot of the bridge in March to permanently acknowledge Carmel McKenna's contribution to the community and the naming of the new Beaconsfield road bridge, “McKenna Drive”.
