McKenna Drive now open

85 dangerous and congested level crossings are now gone for good with the opening of a new road bridge in Beaconsfield.

The Station Street level crossing has been removed and the new McKenna Drive bridge has opened, connecting Beaconsfield Avenue to Kenilworth Avenue over the Pakenham Line.

The opening of the new McKenna Drive bridge will improve safety and keep traffic flowing in the Beaconsfield area by separating trains from vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists.

With this dangerous level crossing gone, the Pakenham Line is one step closer to being level crossing free later this year, with just 2 sets of boom gates to go from Melbourne’s busiest rail line.

Works in the area will continue over the coming months to complete footpath widening, car park, road, landscaping and lighting works as well as removing the redundant boom gates from the old level crossing on Station Street.

Upcoming works

During May and June, we’ll continue working north and south of the rail line to complete road, footpath widening, car park, landscaping and lighting works.

What to expect

• 24/7 rail works from 7pm, Friday 13 June to 7am, Monday 16 June.
• Temporary pedestrian detours on Friday 14 May and Saturday 17 May, 7am to 5pm each day on Beaconsfield Avenue for footpath works.
• Temporary lane closures, intermittent shuttle flow traffic arrangements and reduced speed limits.
• Increased construction activity, noise and vibration.
• Temporary station car space closures in the western car park during asphalt works.
• Lighting for safe working conditions at night.

Changes to the way you travel

Buses replace trains between Dandenong and East Pakenham stations from 9pm, Friday 13 June to last service, Sunday 15 June.
