We're removing the dangerous and congested level crossing at Webb Street, Narre Warren by building a new elevated rail bridge over Webb Street. We’ll also build a new Narre Warren Station, with modern facilities for the community.

The removal of the Webb Street level crossing will help make the Pakenham Line boom gate free by 2025.

Elevating the rail line will reduce congestion on Webb Street, making it safer and easier for drivers, pedestrians and bike riders to move around.

Major construction is scheduled to start in late 2022 and the level crossing will be removed by 2025.

An important part of planning to remove the Webb Street level crossing is to undertake cultural heritage assessments.

Our assessments consider possible impacts of our project on Aboriginal cultural heritage. It helps us to identify opportunities to reduce any potential impacts to Aboriginal places or objects through design refinement and how the project will be constructed.

How we conduct cultural heritage assessments

To ensure we manage Aboriginal cultural heritage, we engage archaeologists and Aboriginal cultural heritage specialists to identify Aboriginal places or objects and prepare a Cultural Heritage Management Plan in accordance with the Aboriginal Heritage Act 2006 before any work begins.

Assessing potential impacts

The Aboriginal cultural heritage assessment involves the preparation of a Cultural Heritage Management Plan.

In collaboration with the Registered Aboriginal Party, we conduct assessments and investigations to identify Aboriginal places or objects.

The next step is to assess the extent to which our proposed design and construction approach could impact on Aboriginal places or object, and explore how any negative effects can be avoided, minimised or mitigated.

Managing heritage impacts

We will develop a Cultural Heritage Management Plan to manage Aboriginal cultural heritage based on the results of the assessment and consultation with the Registered Aboriginal Party.

The plan is evaluated and approved by the Registered Aboriginal Party.
