New community open space
Carnegie level crossing removal opens up space for locals
We're removing 75 level crossings – with 46 already gone for good. The level crossings at Koornang and Grange roads in Carnegie were removed in February 2018 as part of the Caulfield to Dandenong Level Crossing Removal Project.
Community feedback has helped shape the final designs for a new multipurpose recreational space on Girdwood Avenue, a children's playground for the Woorayl Street Reserve and 27 new car spaces in Carnegie.
These new community facilities will link to existing paths used by pedestrians and cyclists, providing safe connections to local businesses and Carnegie Station.
This project will complement the removal of 9 level crossings between Caufield and Dandenong that created 22.5 hectares of open space.
Works will begin in early June and finish late 2021.
We asked you
The community was given the chance to provide feedback on the draft designs for the open spaces in February 2021, on key areas including:

What we heard | What we changed | |
---|---|---|
Safety | Concern with the speed of cyclists riding along the Djerring Trail past the children's playground, the location of the spaces next to busy road and the height of fencing around the multipurpose space and Woorayl Reserve. | The fence height at Girdwood Avenue has been increased from 3m to 4.5m to stop stray balls. Woorayl Street Reserve playground will have enclosed fencing around the perimeter. Bollards will be installed at both sites to protect people from errant vehicles. To encourage cyclists to slow down past the spaces, additional signs will be added on the Djerring Trail. |
Landscaping and vegetation | Protecting the existing vegetation and trees including the red gums at Woorayl Street Reserve, additional native planting and landscaping to what was initially proposed. | Landscaping will include vegetation at the base of the red gum trees to protect the tree roots and discourage sitting on them at Woorayl Street Reserve. Additional vegetation has been added at Girdwood Avenue between the multipurpose recreational space and Dandenong Road. |
Inclusivity | Facilities that are more inclusive of the senior residents who live in the area. | Girdwood Avenue will now feature exercise equipment for senior residents. The new exercise equipment will have a range of stations that involve different activities, designed to improve:
|
Facilities | More fixtures in the open spaces such as picnic tables, additional bins, and seating. | Both spaces will have additional fixtures including picnic tables, seating, and bins. |
Design | Concern about noise from the multipurpose recreation space, and concern about the look of the facilities. | No additional lighting will be added to the space to discourage play after dark, and equipment will have a natural finish to it. |
