Major works on the Cranbourne Line Upgrade ready to begin
The Victorian Government is investing more than $1 billion to duplicate the Cranbourne line, remove four level crossings and build a new Merinda Park Station improving safety, reducing congestion and allowing for more trains more often.
Major construction is now ready to begin for parts of the Cranbourne Line Upgrade works through Dandenong South. In July, construction will ramp up along the rail line, including at Abbotts Road where we will start foundation works for a duplicate rail bridge.
Over the past few months our work crews have created work sites, relocated and protected utility services and installed underground signalling cables.
We’ve also moved into some temporary offices at our main work site near the Greens Road level crossing.
The Greens Road level crossing is one of four being removed between Dandenong and Cranbourne. By 2025 the Cranbourne line will become the first rail line in Melbourne to have no level crossings.
Why we’re upgrading the Cranbourne Rail Line
- making the Cranbourne line the first level crossing free line in Victoria
- cutting travel times by up to 50 minutes per day
- creating room for 121,100 extra peak hour passengers per week
- allowing for 10 minute services on the Cranbourne line.
What’s happening in July?
Works will be ramping up through Dandenong South along the Cranbourne rail line.
Major construction to begin at Abbotts Road
In July, one of the first things you'll see as these works begin are large piling rigs at the Abbotts Road bridge. We’ll use these to drill into the ground to create filled concrete foundations, known as piles, for the new rail bridge.
Piling works can be noisy and you may feel some vibrations. We encourage you to contact us if you have any questions about our works.
Works at Greens Road continue
In July, our works will increase in the area as we work to remove the level crossing by building a rail bridge. Some lane closures of Greens Road will continue as our crews prepare the site for major construction.
We encourage you to check our website for details, look out for regular works notices in your letterbox from our team, and share information with your networks.
Next steps for Greens Road
Major construction at Greens Road will start later this year, with the first step being piling works. To prepare, we are creating stable surfaces along the rail corridor for piling rigs to be positioned. From late 2020 the new rail bridge will start to take shape.
We're removing the level crossing at Greens Road by building a rail bridge over the road, freeing up traffic for the 17,000 drivers who use it each day.
