As part of the Cranbourne Line Upgrade, we’re duplicating 8km of track and removing the last 4 level crossings between Cranbourne and the city, including the Greens Road level crossing.

Work continues across our construction sites in Dandenong South, and further down the line toward Cranbourne.

Major construction begins at Greens Road

In late September, major construction began at Greens Road.

We started using piling rigs to drill into the ground to create concrete foundations, known as piles, for the new rail bridge. Following these works, we’ll install piers to support the rail bridge.

Road closures

So these works can take place, we’ll need to close Greens Road between Kitchen Road and the South Gippsland Highway on the following dates:

  • overnight on Thursday 15 October, 8pm to 6am
  • Friday 16 October 8pm to Monday 19 October 5.30am.

The right lanes on either side of Greens Road will also be temporarily closed for up to 3 weeks.

Road widening at Greens Road

We have widened Greens Road by about 2m to make room for a column that will support the new bridge in the centre median. The centre median on Greens Road has also been widened to 7m at its widest point.

These works are now finished, and we’d like to thank local businesses for their patience.

Why we're upgrading the Cranbourne rail line

  • Making the Cranbourne line the first level crossing free line in Victoria
  • Making journeys faster and safer

What we did in September

A construction blitz in the second week of September saw our crews work around the clock to:

  • move the Greens Road boom gates to a new temporary location to make room for a new rail bridge
  • continue earthworks at our Eumemmerring Creek bridge site
  • carry out excavation work to prepare for the new duplicated track
  • install overhead wiring and underground cables.

Piling completed at Abbotts Road

Our work crews have recently achieved their first major milestone at Abbotts Road, completing piling for the new rail bridge ahead of schedule.

More than 180 piles were installed, progressing construction of the bridge to its next stage. The first bridge columns – known as piers – will be installed in October.

Further down the Cranbourne Line

Works on the new Merinda Park Station have progressed, with site establishment completed and train power and signalling re-routed as we prepare for major works.

Lynbrook Station car park upgrade works are well underway and will be completed in late 2020, with 135 additional spaces added to the Paterson Drive car park, as part of the Car Parks for Commuters Program.

Pound Road West Upgrade

Major Road Projects Victoria will build a new bridge over the Cranbourne line to connect Pound Road West and Remington Drive in Dandenong South.

Construction of the Pound Road West Upgrade will also include intersection upgrades and an extra lane in each direction, and will be delivered by 2025.

Health and safety

The health and safety of our workers and community is our key priority as we continue works on the Cranbourne Line Upgrade.
