What will be different in the design of the new Montmorency Station?

To allow us to get on with the next stage of the project while protecting the endangered Eltham Copper Butterfly, engineers have made a few changes to the project design and our construction methodology.

  • We are no longer duplicating through the area east of Montmorency Station (on the Eltham side of the station) and under Mountain View Road bridge. This also means the Mountain View Road bridge will no longer need to be widened.

Although we will not be duplicating track in this area, we will still need to complete overhead, track and underground service works relating to the existing single track in this area.

Why are you making these changes?

The project is required to comply with all state and federal legislation. Under the Federal Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act (1999), we are required to protect the butterfly habitat.

Because we have redesigned parts of the project, we have avoided impacting the butterfly habitat, therefore no further approvals are required.

Is the station changing or moving?

The new station will not be moving, and will remain in the heart of Montmorency village.

What does this mean for services?

Improved services will still be delivered. Trains will be able to run on average every 7 minutes from Greensborough, every 10 minutes from Montmorency and Eltham, and every 20 minutes from Diamond Creek, Wattle Glen and Hurstbridge.

Why are you still doing work in the area?

We still need to build new underground and overhead rail power and signalling as well as track maintenance works. This work is not impacting the Eltham Copper Butterfly habitat.

What does this mean for the station precinct (e.g. car parking, kiss and ride, bike facilities and pedestrian access)?

We have worked hard to minimise the impact on the layout of the new station and it will remain in the heart of Montmorency Village, with the main entrance and a new pedestrian crossing aligning with Were Street.

The new station car park areas, kiss and ride bays, bike hoops and at-grade, activated pedestrian crossing will remain in the same locations as announced in early 2021.

Will the project be finished in 2022?

Yes. The project will be completed in 2022.
