4 September 2025
We’re building a brand-new station in Tarneit’s west as part of a commitment from the Victorian Government to better connect the growing suburbs of the west to Melbourne’s CBD.
Your new West Tarneit Station will be located near the corner of Leakes and Davis roads.
It will feature a welcoming, landscaped precinct with more than 17,800 plants, including trees, shrubs and grasses. The station will be equipped with seating areas, separated walking and cycling pathways, bike hoops and secure bike storage.
Community feedback we received in 2024 told us that Tarneit locals value natural landscapes, such as the local native grasslands, wetlands and Davis Creek.
Landscaping at West Tarneit Station will include hundreds of diverse, native trees and thousands of new plants and flowers.
New plant and tree species have been carefully considered to complement local geology and history.
Major construction has now commenced and landscaping works will take place in 2026.
Using native plants celebrates the local biodiversity and will help new plants thrive in the local climate and soil conditions.
Quick facts
- More than 17,000 shrubs, grasses and other plants will be planted
- We’ll plant 650 trees as part of the project
- More than 50 native plant species will be planted
Your feedback
At the end of 2024, we asked you to have your say on what you value about the local area, including what you’d like to see reflected in the station design and your landscaping preferences.
There was a high level of community interest in the project during the engagement period, with 332 survey responses received.
Approximately 90% of community members who completed our survey said that introducing landscaping in the precinct was important to them. Respondents also indicated that a variety of plant types is preferred, with a preference towards trees and flowering plants.
Trees
We’re planting 650 trees around the West Tarneit Station precinct, including more than 20 different varieties.
These trees will grow to provide shade and shelter for the station precinct while offering nesting opportunities and food for local wildlife.
Some of the trees you will see at your new station include:
- Lemon-scented gum
- Swamp gum
- Snow gum
- Honey myrtle
- Willow peppermint
- Golden wattle
Plants
We’re planting more than 17,000 plants (excluding trees) at the new West Tarneit Station, including over 30 different varieties.
When selecting the most appropriate species, we focused on providing a resilient, sustainable landscape by selecting drought-tolerant plants with low water usage and high growth performance.
Some of the plants you will see at your new station include:
- Weeping grass
- Nodding saltbush
- Kangaroo grass
- Bulbine lily
- Common everlasting
- Hop goodenia
Features of the new station
As well as planting an extensive variety of flora throughout the new station precinct, we’re equipping West Tarneit Station with facilities to help make your journey more convenient, comfortable and reflective of community design preferences.
Some of the top themes you wanted to see reflected in the station design included bright colours, sustainable materials and a modern design. The features that have been designed for West Tarneit Station reflect these ideas and suggestions.
Your new station will feature:
- eating areas
- platform canopies for weather protection
- stairs and ramps to platforms
- secure bike storage facilities
- bike hoops
- drinking fountain
- bright green tiles in pedestrian underpass
- Protective Services Officers’ facilities
