Calder Park level crossing free in July

We're making the Sunbury Line level crossing free in 2025, a year ahead of schedule, removing 8 dangerous and congested level crossings to improve safety and ease congestion.

Major works are continuing to remove the Calder Park Drive level crossing by building a road bridge over the Sunbury Line. The road bridge will also feature a separated shared use path for pedestrians and cyclists on the eastern side of the bridge.

Traffic improvements in the area mean we can also close the dangerous level crossing at nearby Holden Road, making local roads safer.

The Calder Park Drive level crossing will be gone for good on Wednesday 23 July, after a road closure and 24/7 works.

Why these level crossings need to go

  • More than 10,000 vehicles each day
  • Allows more trains to run more often on the Sunbury Line
  • Boom gates down for up to 20% of the morning peak
  • 3 serious collisions since 2016
  • 25 trains during the morning peak

Upcoming 24/7 works

From Saturday 21 June to late July 2025, we'll work 24/7.

During this time we'll:

  • install concrete beams over the rail line and adjust overheard wiring
  • tie-in the new road bridge with Calder Park Drive
  • install permanent lighting and barriers
  • continue landscaping works on the road bridge and shared use path area.

Upcoming disruptions

During this works blitz the following disruptions will be in place:

  • Calder Park Drive closed between the Glenbruar Drive/Manchester Drive roundabout and the Calder Freeway from 1am, Saturday 21 June until 6am, Wednesday 23 July. Detour via Kings Road and Melton Highway.
  • Holden Road will close to vehicles permanently from 7am, Wednesday 23 July
  • Buses replace trains on the Sunbury Line between Watergardens and Sunbury from Monday 23 June to last service, Sunday 29 June
  • Buses replace trains on sections of the Sunbury Line throughout June and July. To plan your journey visit the PTV website.

Stay up to date on disruptions

While we undertake these critical works there will be a road closure and rail closures at times. Detours will be in place to help you get around.

Beaming out at Calder Park

We've been busy out at Calder Park Drive, with concrete beams being installed on the north and south sides of the rail corridor.

Massive beams lit up the night sky in Melbourne’s north west, as crews worked throughout the evening to complete the second stage of the beam lift for the new Calder Park Drive road bridge.

Over 2 nights, crews transported and craned 9 concrete beams into place on the south side of the rail line.

The giant beams were made locally in Melton, measuring 40m long and 2m high, and weighing about 90 tonnes each.

In November, we installed 7 beams on the north side of the rail line.

During the upcoming road closure, we'll install the last 9 to form the alignment of the new road bridge.

Switching up our shared use path

The new Calder Park Drive shared use path is nearing completion, with the eye-catching elevated structure in its final stages of construction.

Known as a switchback, the path’s looping design connects to the new Calder Park Drive road bridge at a more gentle gradient, improving accessibility for pedestrians and cyclists.

The road bridge being built over the rail line will feature a separated shared use path for pedestrians and cyclists on the eastern side of the bridge.

The switchback complex construction uses a series of “falsework” or temporary scaffolding systems to support the suspended planks and platforms. The new shared use path will link to future walking and cycling connections in the area.

Holden Road closure

Holden Road will permanently close to traffic on Wednesday 23 July.

Vehicles will be able to use the new Calder Park Drive road bridge to access Holden Road via Melton Highway and Plumpton Road.

To keep traffic moving safely on the Calder Freeway, the U-turn facility near Holden Road will be closed to all vehicles, except for emergency vehicles. Drivers can U-turn by using the Bulla-Diggers Rest Road interchange.
