We’re removing the level crossings at Old Calder Highway and Watsons Road, Diggers Rest, improving local safety, and making the Sunbury Line level crossing-free in 2025.

Major construction is underway to remove the level crossing at Old Calder Highway with works ramping up over the coming weeks.

What we’re doing

We’ll work around the clock in the rail corridor near the Old Calder Highway and Watsons Road level crossings while trains aren’t running to undertake signalling and track works as well as build foundations for new overhead wires throughout August and September. Buses will replace trains during these works, please check the information in the below table and follow signage at the station.

During this time, Telstra and NBN Co, will also relocate underground services beside Diggers Rest-Coimadai Road. Minor disruptions to phone and internet services are expected, which will be communicated by utility providers prior to the works.

Day and night works

We’ll undertake day and night works from 11:05pm on Friday 16 August until 3:00am Monday 19 August and from 8.30pm Friday 30 August until last service Sunday 1 September. At all other times throughout August and September we’ll work during regular construction hours from Monday to Friday, between 7am and 6pm and on Saturdays, between 7am and 1pm.

We’ll make every effort to complete works on schedule, however they are weather dependent and dates subject to change.

What to expect

To safely facilitate service relocation works, there will be daytime lane closures on Diggers Rest-Coimadai Road, between Pepper Close and Welcome Road, from Monday 12 August 2024 until early September

During these works, you may notice low to moderate levels of noise, dust and vibration. You may also notice construction vehicles and trucks on local roads including Old Calder Highway, Diggers Rest-Coimadai Road, Tame Street, School Lane and in the Diggers Rest Station car park.

When we work at night, you may notice low to moderate levels of noise and additional lighting in place. Lighting will be directed away from residential properties where possible.

Changes to the way you travel

For your safety, please follow signage and traffic management in place. Please see the works map below for more information about the following travel changes.

Diggers Rest-Coimadai Road

• Traffic controllers and signage will be in place to manage vehicles.
• Two-way traffic will be maintained at all times.

Western car park exit, Diggers Rest Station

• Traffic management and signage will be in place to assist with exiting the car park. Please follow the direction of traffic management personnel.

Footpath closure

Footpath closure on the southern side of Diggers Rest-Coimadai Road from 7am to 5pm weekdays and 7am to 1pm Saturday from Monday 12 August until early September.

• Signage and a detour will be in place to guide pedestrians through the area.
• See map below for location of closure.

Western car park, Diggers Rest Station

• Up to 15 spaces closed intermittently along the northern side of the western car park, to safely facilitate project works.
• Please use remaining available spaces.
• There will also be intermittent traffic management in the area.

Sunbury Line train services

• Signage will be in place to guide passengers to bus replacement services.

Eastern car park, Diggers Rest Station

Partial car park closure from 7am Friday 30 August to 7am Monday 2 September.

• Approximately 30 spaces in the eastern car park closed to access the rail corridor. Please use remaining spaces.
