We’re removing the level crossings at Old Calder Highway and Watsons Road, Diggers Rest, improving local safety, and making the Sunbury Line level crossing-free in 2025.
Major construction continues while we install the bridge foundations at Old Calder Highway near Diggers Rest Station.
What we’re doing
Throughout September and October, we’ll:
- relocate underground utility services beside Diggers Rest-Coimadai Road and in the rail corridor
- relocate overhead utility services beside Old Calder Highway
- continue excavating and compacting the ground in our western site
- continue building the bridge foundations and retained earth walls on both sides of the rail line
- undertake signalling and track works, and build structures to support new overhead wires in the rail corridor
- establish an entrance to the works site at 1 Diggers Rest-Coimadai Road
- continue underground utility and service relocations at Watsons Road
- install traffic management signage at Watsons Road.
The closure of Watsons Road has been rescheduled to commence in late 2024.
When we’ll work
We’ll work during regular construction hours from Monday to Friday, between 7am and 6pm and on Saturdays, between 7am and 1pm.
During the utility relocation works beside Diggers Rest-Coimadai Road scheduled from 23 September to Saturday 5 October, we’ll need to work extended hours on weekdays from 6am to 6pm and on Saturdays and Sundays from 7am until 3pm.
We may also need to complete 2 nights of works during this time. If this is required, impacted residents will be notified in advance.
What to expect
To safely facilitate utility relocation works, we’ll need to close one lane on Diggers Rest-Coimadai Road, between Pepper Close and Welcome Road. Two-way traffic will be maintained at all times and traffic management in place to guide you through the area safely.
During daytime works, you may notice low to moderate levels of noise, dust and vibration. You may also notice construction vehicles and trucks on local roads including Old Calder Highway, Diggers Rest-Coimadai Road, Tame Street, School Lane and in the Diggers Rest Station car park.
Utility providers will communicate any impacts to services associated with utility relocation works.

For your safety, please follow signage and traffic management in place. Please see the works map on the next page for more information about the following travel change.
Old Calder Highway
- Intermittent and temporary lane closures.
- Two-way traffic will be maintained at all times.
Diggers Rest-Coimadai Road
- Intermittent lane closures and traffic management at 1 Diggers Rest -Coimadai Road .
- Two-way traffic will be maintained at all times.
- Expect short delays.
7am, Monday 23 September to 1pm, Saturday 5 October:
- Continuous lane closure between Pepper Close, Tame Street and Welcome Road (alternating between northbound and southbound lanes).
- Traffic controllers and temporary traffic lights in place to manage vehicles.
- Two-way traffic maintained at all times. Expect short delays.
Western car park, Diggers Rest Station
- Up to 15 additional spaces closed intermittently in the western car park to safely facilitate project works. Please use remaining available spaces.
- There will also be intermittent traffic management in the area.
Roundabout at intersection of Welcome and License roads
- Lane closure at the roundabout.
- Traffic controllers in place to manage vehicles.
- Two-way traffic maintained at all times.
Watsons Road near level crossing
- Intermittent and temporary lane closures, and speed reduction.
- Two-way traffic will be maintained at all times.
