Upcoming day and night works and travel changes

We’re removing the level crossings at Old Calder Highway and Watsons Road, Diggers Rest, improving local safety, and making the Sunbury Line level crossing-free in 2025.

In late November and early December, we’ll work around the clock at Old Calder Highway and Watsons Road to complete critical works while trains are not running.

Buses will replace trains on sections of the Sunbury Line from 9pm Wednesday 4 December to last service Thursday 12 December.

What we’re doing

Friday 29 November to Friday 13 December, we’ll work 24/7 in the rail corridor and at Old Calder Highway to:

  • Deliver and install large concrete beams
  • Install and commission overhead structures and remove redundant foundations
  • Continue utility relocation works

Heavy machinery will also be delivered to site via Diggers Rest-Coimadai Road from 11pm on Monday 25 November.

Wednesday 4 December to Friday 13 December, we’ll work 24/7 at Watsons Road to:

  • Remove the boom gates
  • Install and commission overhead train line structures and remove redundant foundations
  • Install new drainage under the rail line
  • Relocate underground utilities
  • Install temporary construction access roads

What to expect

You may notice low to moderate levels of noise, dust and vibration. You may also notice construction vehicles and trucks on local roads, including Old Calder Highway, Diggers Rest-Coimadai Road, Tame Street, School Lane, and in the Diggers Rest Station car parks, Watsons Road, Old Vineyard Road, Bulla-Diggers Rest Road and Crinnion Road.

When we work at night, additional lighting will be in place and directed away from residential properties where possible.

We’ll make every effort to complete works on schedule, however they are weather-dependent and dates are subject to change.

Impacted residents will be contacted prior to the commencement of works.

Changes to the way you travel

Diggers Rest Station car park

  • Friday 29 November to Friday 13 December
  • Up to 200 commuter spaces will be closed at times.Limited car parking will be available at Diggers Rest Station. Alternative parking, including accessible parking, is available in the multi-deck car park at Sunbury Station.

Sunbury Line

  • 9pm, Wednesday 4 December to last service, Thursday 12 December
  • Buses replace trains on sections of the Sunbury Line.

Diggers Rest-Coimadai Road

  • Friday 29 November to Friday 13 December
  • Intermittent traffic management will be in place at 1 Diggers Rest-Coimadai Road.
  • Two-way traffic will be maintained at all times. Expect short delays.

Old Calder Highway level crossing

  • Wednesday 4 December to Friday 13 December
  • Speeds will be reduced to 40km/hr and traffic management will be in place at the Old Calder Highway level crossing.

Watsons Road, at the level crossing

  • Ongoing until late 2025
  • Watsons Road will be closed at the level crossing until late 2025.
  • Detour via Watsons Road, Crinnion Road, Bulla-Diggers Rest Road, Calder Freeway and Vineyard Road
  • Detour via Watsons Road, Old Vineyard Road, Vineyard Road, Calder Freeway, Bulla-Diggers Rest Road and Crinnion Road
