1 March 2024

We’re removing the level crossings at Old Calder Highway and Watsons Road, Diggers Rest, improving local safety, and making the Sunbury Line level crossing-free in 2025.

Thank you for your patience as we carried out site investigation works near the Watsons Road level crossing in late 2023. We need to carry out further works in the area in March and April 2024. We also need to test train signalling equipment in and next to the rail corridor in early March 2024. Access to private properties will be maintained at all times.

What we’re doing

We’ll conduct utility service location and surveying works on the road reserve at Watsons Road near the level crossing, at the intersection of Watsons Road and Buckley Road, and at the intersection of Watsons Road and Buckland Way. We will also work in the rail corridor near the Watsons Road level crossing.

We’ll also test train signalling equipment in and next to the rail corridor north of the Watsons Road level crossing.

When we’ll work

  • Intermittently on weekdays from 7am to 6pm, Thursday 7 March to Tuesday 30 April.
  • In and next to the rail corridor north of the Watsons Road level crossing from 8pm to 5am each night from Sunday 3 March to Wednesday 6 March. Metro Trains will also undertake maintenance works in and around the rail corridor on these nights.

What to expect

While we work, you may notice:

  • work crews, construction vehicles (including trucks) and digging equipment in the area
  • temporary fencing around the work areas to ensure safety of the community and our crews
  • low to moderate noise while we conduct these works.

Changes to the way you travel

From Thursday 7 March to Tuesday 30 April, there will be intermittent and temporary lane closures along Watsons Road near the level crossing. Travel in both directions will be maintained at all times and traffic management will be in place to guide motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians through the area during these lane closures.
