We’re removing the level crossing at Maidstone Street, Altona, by building a new road bridge over the rail line to improve safety and create better connections, including to the new West Gate Tunnel.

Works on the project are now well underway, with major construction starting this month. Thank you for your patience while we continue to deliver this important infrastructure project.

Works in December and January

From early December 2025 to late February 2026, we will be using a piling rig to drill deep holes into the ground, fill them with reinforcement and concrete to create strong foundations for the road bridge.

Other works include:

  • compacting the ground to create a level surface where heavy equipment can operate safely
  • removing waste material around the project area, in line with strict health and safety guidelines.

Underground service relocation works

  • To make way for the new road bridge, we need to relocate underground power, gas, sewer, water and telecommunication services along Maidstone Street and surrounding roads.
  • We are working closely with service providers and will endeavour to keep you informed about what to expect during these works. Service providers will communicate with properties and customers directly if services, or access, may be affected.

What to expect

  • Normal working hours are Monday to Friday between 7am and 6pm and Saturday between 7am and 3pm.
  • Reduced speed limits and traffic management will be in place around our work areas, resulting in minor delays at times. Please follow all directional signage and travel safely when moving through the area.
  • Some out of hours works may be required, we will communicate with directly impacted stakeholders ahead of time.
  • Increase in construction vehicles, delivery trucks and machinery moving around the area.
  • During some activities you may notice an increase in construction noise, vibration and dust.

Site shutdown period

There will be no construction activity during the holiday period. Construction works will finish on Friday 19 December 2025 and recommence on Tuesday 13 January 2026.
