We’re removing the level crossing at Maidstone Street, Altona, by building a new road bridge over the rail line to improve safety and create better connections, including to the new West Gate Tunnel.

Major construction on the project is underway. Thank you for your patience as we deliver this important project.

What we’re doing

In March, we will continue to:

  • construct foundations and groundworks for the new road bridge, and
  • complete critical works in the rail corridor during a closure of the Werribee Line.

Reminder: buses replace trains and out of hours works

Buses replace trains from 8.30pm, Friday 27 February to last service Sunday 1 March between Newport and  Werribee on the Werribee Line.

For more information about changes on the Werribee Line, please visit Transport Victoria.

While no trains are running between Newport and Werribee, the project will work outside of regular construction hours from 7pm, Friday 27 February to 3am, Monday 2 March to complete critical works to install new rail infrastructure inside the rail corridor.

Service relocation works

To make way for the new road bridge, we need to relocate underground power, gas, sewer, water and telecommunication services along Maidstone Street and surrounding roads.

We are working closely with service providers who will communicate with you directly if services or access are affected.

What to expect

  • Normal working hours are Monday to Friday between 7am and 6pm and Saturday between 7am and 3pm.
  • Reduced speed limits and traffic management will be in place around our work areas, resulting in minor delays at times. Please follow all directional signage and travel safely when moving through the area.
  • Increase in construction vehicles, delivery trucks and machinery moving around the area.
  • Traffic management and light towers present to ensure the works can take place safely.
  • During some activities you may notice an increase in construction noise, vibration and dust.
