We’re removing the Maddox Road and Champion Road level crossings, Newport to improve safety and create more reliable travel times.

We’re building rail bridges over Maddox Road and closing Champion Road at the rail line. To keep locals moving, we’re extending Akuna Drive to connect Champion Road to Maddox Road. The new road will open before Champion Road is closed in 2026. We’ll also build a new pedestrian and cycling bridge over the rail line at Champion Road.

New temporary parking arrangements

We're making changes to parking arrangements on Champion Road and Akuna Drive to help meet local community and business needs in the area.

The changes will provide a mix of long-term and short-term parking for businesses and patrons, help pedestrians and vehicles move safely through the area, and support truck movements at the Champion Road and Akuna Drive intersection during construction.

The new parking arrangements will take effect from 3 September 2025 and will be in place for the duration of the project.

Changes to parking

Champion Road (East)

• 15 car spaces south of Shea Street to become all day parking (no time restrictions).
• 3 car spaces south of Shea Street temporarily removed for a pedestrian crossing.
• 23 two-hour car spaces north of Shea Street remain.

Champion Road (West)

• A new 10-minute pick up/drop off zone outside 199 Champion Road will be created to support community and recreational activities. This will be in place Monday to Friday, 3pm to 8pm. Two-hour parking will remain at all other times.
• 7 car spaces south of Akuna Drive temporarily removed for a pedestrian crossing.

Akuna Drive (North)

• 4 car spaces on the north side of Akuna Drive will become a 'no standing' area, Monday to Saturday, between 7am to 4pm. This will help support truck movements on Akuna Drive. Unrestricted parking at all other times.
