5 May 2026

We’re removing the Maddox Road and Champion Road level crossings to make Newport level crossing free in 2026 – improving safety and creating more reliable travel times.

As part of the project, we’ve built 2 new passenger rail bridges over Maddox Road, installed a pedestrian and cycling bridge at Champion Road and opened the new Akuna Drive link road.

We are also improving walking and cycling connections in the area, with new paths along Railway Parade and Market Street to keep locals moving safely around the area.

New shared use path

We will also build a new walking and cycling path connecting Maddox Road and Ross Road. This will provide a safe off-road connection from Newport Station all the way to Altona North.

The new shared use path will be built next to the rail line, providing a direct link between Maddox Road and Ross Road.

The path will help locals get to places they love. Local sports clubs, the Australian Islamic Centre, the Altona Miniature Railway and other community hubs on Blenheim Road will be easily and safely accessible for pedestrians and cyclists from Maddox Road.

  • Approx. 950 metres of new pedestrian and cycling paths.
  • New Champion Road pedestrian and cycling bridge.
  • New Maddox Road pedestrian crossing.

Why these level crossings need to go

  • Up to 48 trains pass through the level crossings during the morning peak.
  • Boom gates down for around 50 minutes during the morning peak.
  • Over 10,000 vehicles travel through these crossings each day.
