April works and overhead utilities relocations

We’re removing the Maddox Road and Champion Road level crossings, Newport to improve safety and create more reliable travel times.

We're building rail bridges over Maddox Road and closing Champion Road at the rail line.

To keep locals moving, we’re extending Akuna Drive to connect Champion Road to Maddox Road. This new road will open before Champion Road is closed in 2026. We’ll also build a new pedestrian and cycling bridge over the rail line at Champion Road.

What we’re doing

In late April, we’ll start relocating overhead utility services near the Maddox Road level crossing and from late May there will be further works in and around the rail corridor to set up our site.

To safely conduct these works there will be traffic impacts to Maddox Road from late April to early June.

We will:

  • Close Maddox Road overnight on Monday 28 April to safely install temporary traffic barriers.
  • Close the northbound lane from Tuesday 29 April, for up to 4 weeks to move power poles.
  • Close the road at the level crossing from 8.30pm on Friday 23 May until late on Sunday 25 May for works in the rail corridor
  • Close the road for one night in late May to install temporary traffic signals.

Detours will be in place to keep you moving safely through the area with signage in place to help you get around.

We will be speaking with affected residents and traders.

Buses will replace trains on the Werribee Line from 9pm Friday 23 May to last service Sunday 25 May.

We’re also getting ready to extend Akuna Drive to connect Champion Road to Maddox Road.

These works will include:

  • Installation of site office and lay-down areas near Akuna Drive, which will include compacting the ground to allow us to install site sheds safely.
  • Clearing the ground before we start works on the new link road.
  • Preparing the site for underground service relocation works.
  • Removal of waste material within the works area. Waste material will be removed in line with strict health and safety guidelines.

What to expect

We’ll work from 7am to 6pm on weekdays and 7am to 3pm on Saturdays. We’ll also work 24/7 from 8.30pm on Friday 23 May to late on Sunday 25 May in the rail corridor. If we need to work outside of these times, we’ll let the community know in advance.

During this time, there will be changes to the way you travel, including parking, road conditions and pedestrian paths. You may also notice an increase in construction personnel and machinery and moderate noise and vibration at times.
