29 July 2024

We’re removing the Maddox Road level crossing by building 2 rail bridges over the road, improving safety, reducing congestion, and improving local connections.

We're closing the level crossing at Champion Road, only 500 metres away, and building a new link road to keep vehicles moving, improve safety, and create more reliable travel times.

The link road will connect Champion Road to Maddox Road directly via Akuna Drive and will open before the Champion Road level crossing is closed in 2026.

What we're doing

To help inform the project design, we need to take soil samples, conduct visual inspections and investigate utilities at various locations throughout the project area.

These works will take place from August 2024 until late September 2024 between 7am and 6pm on weekdays and 7am and 3.30pm on Saturdays.

Locations include:

  • Within the rail corridor between Newport Station and Millers Road
  • Maddox Road, near the level crossing
  • Champion Road, near the level crossing
  • Kororoit Creek Road, between Maddox Road and Mary Street
  • Park Crescent
  • Akuna Drive

Works include collecting soil samples using a drilling rig, a small excavator and non-destructive digging to investigate where utilities are in the area and conducting general visual inspections and feature surveys.

What to expect

While we work, you may notice:

  • Crews collecting soil samples using a drilling rig, trucks and other small machinery and hand tools
  • Crews in the area conducting site investigations and an increase in construction vehicles
  • Temporary safety fencing installed at each investigation site
  • Intermittent reduced speeds, lane closures and pedestrian detours in place to help crews work safely
  • Traffic management in place to help guide motorists and pedestrians safely through the area.

Every effort will be made to complete these works on schedule, however, these dates and locations are subject to change.

Changes to the way you travel

Road

To allow us to safely conduct site investigation works, there may be intermittent changes to how you drive around the area. This may include shuttle flow and temporary speed reductions around local roads. When required, traffic management will be in place to help guide motorists and pedestrians safely through the area.
