We’re removing the level crossings at Maddox and Champion roads, improving safety and creating more reliable travel times.

We're building rail bridges over Maddox Road and a new link road to keep vehicles moving. The link road, connecting Maddox Road to Champion Road via Akuna Drive, will open before the Champion Road level crossing closes in 2026.

What we’re doing

To help inform the project design, we need to take soil samples, conduct visual inspections and investigate utilities at various locations throughout the project area.

These works will take place throughout October and November between:

  • 7am and 6pm on weekdays
  • 7am and 3.30pm on Saturdays
  • 8am and 3.30pm on Sunday 17 November.

Locations include:

  • Within the rail corridor between Newport Station and Millers Road
  • Maddox Road, near the level crossing
  • Champion Road, near the level crossing
  • Railway Parade and adjacent streets
  • Market Street Reserve
  • Kororoit Creek Road, between Maddox Road and Myrtle Street
  • At the intersection of Kororoit Creek Road and Maddox Road
  • Park Crescent
  • Akuna Drive

Works include collecting soil samples using a drilling rig, a small excavator and non-destructive digging to investigate where utilities are in the area and conducting general visual inspections and feature surveys.

We’ll also be delivering construction materials and equipment from other projects to 80 – 90 Champion Road, Newport, the former Victoria University (TAFE Division) Newport Campus.

What to expect

While we work, you may notice:

  • Crews collecting soil samples using a drilling rig, other small machinery and hand tools
  • Crews in the area conducting site investigations and an increase in construction vehicles and trucks
  • Temporary safety fencing installed at each investigation site
  • Intermittent reduced speeds, lane closures and pedestrian detours in place to help crews work safely
  • Traffic management in place to help guide drivers and pedestrians safely through the area
  • Truck movement and idling during deliveries at Champion Road

Every effort will be made to complete these works on schedule, however, these dates and locations are subject to change.

Changes to the way you travel

Road

To allow us to safely conduct site investigation works, there may be intermittent changes to how you drive around the area. This may include shuttle flow and temporary speed reductions around local roads. When required, traffic management will be in place to help guide motorists and pedestrians safely through the area.
