We’re removing the Maddox Road and Champion Road level crossings, Newport to improve safety and create more reliable travel times.

As part of these works, we’re extending Akuna Drive to connect Champion Road to Maddox Road. The new road will open before Champion Road is closed in 2026.

What we’re doing

We’re setting up site offices and facilities and preparing the project area for major construction. These works include:

• preparing the ground to allow us to extend Akuna Drive
• continuing to install our site offices and laydown areas
• removal of vegetation, waste materials and rubbish within the rail corridor between Champion and Rosshire roads on the industrial side of the tracks.

What to expect

While we work, you may notice:

• Akuna Drive speed limit reduced to 40km/h
• an increase in construction vehicles, delivery trucks and machinery
• an increase in construction noise, vibration and dust. Our team will have controls in place to reduce and monitor these impacts.

Works will take place Monday to Friday 7am to 6pm and Saturdays 7am to 3pm. We’ll be in touch with directly impacted residents and businesses in advance of any works.
