25 November 2024
We’re removing the level crossings at Maddox and Champion roads, improving safety and creating more reliable travel times.
We're building rail bridges over Maddox Road and closing Champion Road at the rail line.
To keep locals moving we’re extending Akuna Drive to connect Champion Road to Maddox Road. This new road will open before Champion Road is closed in 2026. We’ll also build a new pedestrian and cycling bridge over the rail line at Champion Road.
What we’re doing
Site investigations are ongoing to map and prepare for relocation of utilities, site establishment and construction next year. Works will include collecting soil samples using a drilling rig, a small excavator and non-destructive digging.
We’ll continue to deliver construction materials and equipment to 80 – 90 Champion Road, Newport, the former Victoria University (TAFE Division) Newport Campus. We’ll also start to set up our site office at Unit 2, 21 Macaulay Road. Both sites will be in use until the project is complete.
Works will take place throughout December and January between:
- 7am and 6pm, Monday to Friday
- 7am to 3.30pm, Saturdays
Locations include:
- Within the rail corridor between Newport Station and Millers Road
- Maddox Road, near the level crossing
- Champion Road, near the level crossing
- Lloyd Street
- Railway Parade and adjacent streets
- Market Street Reserve
- Kororoit Creek Road, between Maddox Road and Myrtle Street
- At the intersection of Kororoit Creek Road and Maddox Road
- Park Crescent
- Akuna Drive
Project works will pause for a break from Wednesday 18 December to Monday 13 January. When works resume in January, we’ll also:
- set up our site construction compounds within the rail corridor between Champion Road and Paisley Drain
- carry out traffic data collection along Maddox Road between Macaulay and Albemarle streets.
What to expect
While we work, you may notice:
- an increase in crews, construction vehicles and trucks
- temporary safety fencing installed around our work areas
- intermittent reduced speeds, lane closures and pedestrian detours in place
- traffic management will be in place to help the delivery of materials and guide drivers and pedestrians safely through the area.
