27 January 2026

We’re removing the Maddox Road and Champion Road level crossings, Newport to improve safety, create more reliable travel times and prepare for more trains, more often.

We’re building rail bridges over Maddox Road and closing Champion Road at the rail line. To keep locals moving, we’re extending Akuna Drive to connect Champion Road to Maddox Road. The new road will open before Champion Road closes in 2026. We’ll also build a new pedestrian and cycling bridge over the rail line at Champion Road.

What we’re doing

In February, we’ll continue with major construction works. During this time, we’ll:

  • Continue to build new bridges, including embankment construction, for rail bridges over Maddox Road and the new pedestrian and cycling bridge over the rail line at Champion Road.
  • Continue works to build the new Akuna Drive link road, including upgrades to the Maddox Road and Launceston Street intersections.
  • Lay crushed rock and soil hardstands within the rail corridor between Berty Street and Rosshire Road to support the weight of large machinery and equipment.
  • Relocate rail assets and drainage infrastructure.
  • Continue to build 50 new, permanent car spaces for the community on Park Crescent.
  • Start intersection upgrade works on Kororoit Creek Road including a longer turning lane and a new U-turn, and traffic signal upgrades at the Maddox Road and Adeline Street intersections.
  • Minor vegetation and waste material removal where required, in line with strict health and safety guidelines.

Maddox Road closures

Maddox Road will be closed at night only from 7pm to 7am Monday 16 February to Wednesday 18 February and then 24/7 from 7pm Thursday 19 February until 6am Friday 6 March.

As major construction continues, an increase in construction traffic means Maddox Road can no longer be used as an informal pedestrian crossing. For your safety, please use all designated pedestrian routes and follow detour directions where required to help keep workers, drivers, and pedestrians safe.

Out of hours works

Throughout February, we will be working around the clock across the project area to carry out construction, drainage, rail infrastructure, and embankment works. We’ll be in touch with directly impacted residents and traders about what this means for them.

Other works in the area

We’ll also relocate underground water, power and telecommunication services. We’re working closely with service providers and will endeavour to keep you informed about what to expect during these works. Service providers will communicate with properties and customers directly if services or access may be affected.
