18 December 2025

We’re removing the Maddox Road and Champion Road level crossings, Newport to improve safety, create more reliable travel times and prepare for more trains, more often.

We’re building rail bridges over Maddox Road and closing Champion Road at the rail line. To keep locals moving, we’re extending Akuna Drive to connect Champion Road to Maddox Road. The new road will open before Champion Road closes in 2026. We’ll also build a new pedestrian and cycling bridge over the rail line at Champion Road.

What we’re doing

In January, we’ll continue with major construction works. During this time, we’ll:

  • Continue to build the new rail bridges and walking and cycling bridge, including embankment construction.
  • Continue works to build the new Akuna Drive link road, including the Maddox Road and Launceston Street intersections.
  • Construct hardstands within the rail corridor between Berty Street and Rosshire Road to support the weight of large machinery and equipment.
  • Relocate rail assets and drainage infrastructure.
  • Continue to build the 50 new car spaces on Park Crescent.
  • Remove vegetation and waste material where required in line with strict health and safety guidelines.

Out of hours works

The truss structure for the pedestrian and cycle bridge will be delivered in sections each night from Monday 19 until Saturday 24 January. To reduce disruption to the road network the oversize deliveries must be delivered at night when there are less vehicles on the road. The oversized sections will be assembled on-site ahead of installation in mid-2026.
