We’re removing the dangerous and congested level crossing at Old Geelong Road in Hoppers Crossing by building a new road bridge, directly connecting Princes Highway to Old Geelong Road.

We will remove the level crossing by building a road bridge over the rail line, creating a new direct connection from Old Geelong Road to Princes Highway.

At the existing level crossing, we will build a pedestrian overpass to allow safe and easy access to Hoppers Crossing Station.

Setting up site

In early 2020, we will set up a site compound on the corner of Princes Highway and Hoppers Lane. This will include site offices, staff car parking and space to store materials.

Early works

Once we’re set up, we will relocate local services such as electricity and water and cover the gas pipes to make way for the new bridge.

Major construction

Next, we will start building the road bridge, starting with earthworks that will form the bridge approaches and piers. Then, we will build the retaining walls and lift into position the concrete beams that will form the top of the bridge.

So we can safely complete these works, some temporary rail and road shutdowns will be required.

In late 2020, we will start to build the pedestrian overpass, with the stairs and lift shafts constructed first, then the steel truss bridge will be lifted into place to form the walkway. The structure will be slightly west of the existing crossing point, allowing us to keep the level crossing open during construction.

The road bridge will open in late 2021 and the pedestrian overpass will open in early 2022.

Finishing touches

Once major construction is complete, we'll undertake finishing works such as landscaping, commissioning lights and painting.

Working with the community to minimise disruption

We will work with local residents and other stakeholders to understand their needs and minimise any impacts to the community as much as possible. We will also support local traders through activities that encourage the community to continue to shop in the area.

Our team will be available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to speak to anyone who has concerns or queries about the construction works.

Communication through construction

Local residents, businesses and other important stakeholders will be kept up to date during construction through a range of channels, including:

  • letterbox drops and doorknocks
  • community drop-in sessions and pop-ups
  • local newspaper advertisements
  • social media
  • onsite information boards and station posters.
