Removing the Werribee Street level crossing with a rail bridge will improve safety, local connections and provide more consistent travel times.

The rail bridge will be about 1km long and up to 6m high when it crosses Werribee Street, with tracks for both freight and regional trains.

During construction of the elevated rail bridge, we expect some noise and vibration. There are rules and guidelines that govern how we undertake our work and we’ll be available to answer your questions before, during and after construction.

Setting up site

In mid 2020, we'll set up a site compound on the north side of the rail lines, which will include site offices, staff car parking and space to store materials.

Early works

Initial works will involve relocation of local services such as electricity and water, and works to protect other utilities such as the gas and oil pipelines.

At this time, we will build about 750m of temporary track next to where the new elevated rail will go. This will minimise train disruptions while we build the new structure.

Major construction

Then, we will start piling works to construct the bridge foundations. Piles are deep concrete foundations that will support the new elevated rail.

Once the supporting abutments and columns are in place, we will build the structures that enclose the tracks, known as U-troughs. To form the U-troughs, L-shaped beams will be lifted into place by cranes and ‘stitched’ together with concrete.

We will then install the new track within the bridge structure. Once the rail bridge is ready for trains, the temporary track will be dismantled, and the level crossing will be removed.

Finishing touches

Once major construction is complete, we will undertake finishing works such as landscaping and delivering new community space created under the new rail bridge.

Working with the community to minimise disruption

We will work with local residents, traders and other stakeholders to understand their needs and minimise any impacts to the community as much as possible.

Our team will be available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to speak to anyone who has concerns or queries about our works.

Communication through construction

Local residents, businesses and other important stakeholders will be kept up to date during construction through a range of channels, including:

  • letterbox drops and doorknocks
  • community drop-in sessions and pop-ups
  • local newspaper advertisements
  • social media
  • onsite information boards and station posters
  • 24-hour information line during construction
  • email updates to subscribers.
