Level crossing gone in November

The dangerous and congested level crossing at Ferguson Street will be gone for good months ahead of schedule, and trains will stop at a new North Williamstown Station in November this year.

Major works at Ferguson Street have kicked off, with a 30-tonne piling rig recently delivered to site.

An upcoming extended construction blitz will start on Sunday 15 August and finish Saturday 13 November.

During this time, crews will work around the clock to excavate a rail trench, remove the level crossing, and start building a new North Williamstown Station.

The North Williamstown Station will close from 2 August, to prepare for the major disruption.

Finishing works and landscaping at the Station and around Station precinct will continue through to 2022.

Removing the level crossing will mean a safer Williamstown for all locals and we’d like to thank the Williamstown community in advance for your patience while we work.

Why we're removing the level crossing:

  • More than 25,000 motorists cross this level crossing each day
  • More than 110 trains pass through every weekday
  • Two fatalities, one collision with a cyclist and at least 5 near misses at this level crossing

What to expect

During this major works period, crews will work around the clock at the Ferguson Street intersection and within the rail corridor.

During this time, we'll:

  • drill foundations
  • excavate the rail trench
  • build a new North Williamstown Station with lowered platforms, stairs and lifts
  • remove the level crossing

During this time, you will notice an increase in construction activities and workers.

We’ll continue to update the Williamstown community about the progress of the project and upcoming construction activities and impacts.

Changes to travel

During this major works period, there’ll be some changes to the way you travel in the area.

  • Buses replace trains between Newport and Williamstown from 8.30pm Friday 20 August to last service Friday 12 November
  • Ferguson Street closed at the level crossing to motorists from Sunday 15 August for up to 6 weeks
  • North Williamstown Station will close from Monday 2 August to prepare for the major rail disruption, a shuttle service will be in place to take passengers to neighbouring stations.

By the end of November, the Ferguson Street level crossing will be gone for good, months ahead of schedule.
