About Melbourne Airport Rail
Melbourne Airport Rail is a transformational public transport project connecting Melbourne Airport to Victoria’s regional and metropolitan train network for the first time.
The Australian and Victorian governments have agreed that Melbourne Airport Rail will run on dedicated, new tracks from a new premium station at Melbourne Airport to Sunshine Station, where it will then travel through the Metro Tunnel into the heart of the CBD before continuing on to the Cranbourne and Pakenham lines.
The final project budget will be confirmed once all major contracts are awarded, with construction to begin in 2022 and a target opening date for Melbourne Airport Rail of 2029.
This solution delivers the best connections from Melbourne Airport to the regions and suburbs for all Victorians with;10 minute turn-up-and-go services, easy transfers to regional lines and trips into the heart of the CBD in under 30 minutes.
As well as connecting people to and from the airport, Melbourne Airport Rail connects passengers to Melbourne’s key health, research and education, development, employment and tourism precincts.
Gippsland Line Upgrade
Melbourne Airport Rail builds on the significant investment the Australian and Victorian governments are making on the Gippsland Line to deliver more frequent and reliable services.
The Gippsland Line Upgrade includes:
- building a new rail bridge over the Avon River in Stratford to allow trains to travel up to 90 km/h, up from 10 km/h currently
- second platforms and station amenity works at Bunyip, Longwarry, Morwell and Traralgon stations
- extension of Morwell crossing loop
- level crossing, signalling and drainage structure upgrades.
The Victorian Government is also building a Superstation at Pakenham which will provide a dedicated V/Line track and third platform to separate the metropolitan and regional trains — reducing delays for Gippsland Line passengers.
