Connecting Melbourne Airport to our rail network

Melbourne Airport Rail is a transformational public transport project that will connect Victoria’s entire regional and metropolitan rail network to the airport and support up to 8000 jobs during construction.

We are delivering a rail service that connects people from the airport to where they need to go — be that work, home or Victoria’s major regional centres.

Airport trains will run through the Metro Tunnel, providing passengers with a 10-minute turn-up-and-go service from Melbourne Airport and a continuous journey of around 30 minutes into the CBD. Trains will run through the transport superhubs at Arden, Footscray and Sunshine around every 2 to 3 minutes, creating jobs and development opportunities in these important precincts.

Benefits for all Victorians

  • Access to the entire public transport network including to Geelong, Ballarat, Bendigo and Gippsland with a single interchange.
  • A new premium station at Melbourne Airport with services every 10 minutes.
  • Seamless transit from the Airport to Sunshine in 11 minutes, Footscray in 18 minutes and the heart of Melbourne’s CBD in around 30 minutes.
  • Thirty stations will have direct access to Melbourne Airport without changing trains, with passengers from all other metropolitan stations only needing to change once.
  • Melbourne Airport Rail will combine with the Metro Tunnel, Regional Rail Revival, Sunbury Line Upgrade and Geelong Fast Rail to provide more trains, more often for the west of Melbourne and Victoria.

Catching a train to the airport from 2029

Melbourne Airport Rail will build a new station at Melbourne Airport connecting to the rail network at Sunshine. Passengers will then travel through the Metro Tunnel into the CBD before continuing on to the Cranbourne and Pakenham lines.

Passengers on all City Loop trains will be able to connect to airport trains at Flinders Street and Melbourne Central stations.

The majority of Victorians will be able to get to the airport with just one interchange. Families in the booming south-eastern suburbs will be able to get to the airport without changing trains.

Melbourne’s west will also have direct airport access via Sunshine Station, or Footscray Station for passengers on the Werribee and Williamstown lines.

Passengers from the regional centres of Geelong, Ballarat and Bendigo will travel to the airport via a single interchange at Sunshine, while Gippsland passengers will be connected via a choice of interchanges along the Cranbourne and Pakenham lines.
