17 October 2022
In October we will start the relocation and protection of critical utility services along the Melbourne Airport Rail route such as electricity, telecommunications, water, gas and other infrastructure in Sunshine North.
Site preparations will include fencing of work sites and establishing secure areas to store materials and equipment and provide amenities for construction workers. Upcoming works will involve digging trenches for new pipes to be laid or boring the new pipes underground.
What we are doing
- Establishing site compounds, access routes and hardstand areas for machinery
- Installing fencing to create safe work areas and protect environmental values
- Trenching for the relocation of sewers and relining existing sewer pipelines
- Digging shafts to launch micro tunnel boring machines
- Boring under the rail corridor to place new pipes for water, electricity, telecommunications and gas services
- Removing trees near the rail corridor
- Installing new power poles and raising the height of some existing lines
What to be aware of
- Sections of the following roads will be closed at times during the works period
- Gilmour Road
- Mansfield Avenue
- Access for vehicles will be restricted at the western end of Gee Street, Cranbourne Avenue and Barwon Avenue to allow for the establishment of work areas
- Sections of shared use paths and footpaths along Gilmour Road and Mansfield Avenue will be closed at times. Detours will be in place
- Driveway access may be temporarily disrupted at times. Residents will be notified directly regarding driveway access changes
- The existing pedestrian crossing of the rail corridor at Barwon Avenue will remain open
- Some on-street parking on Mansfield Avenue, Gilmour Road, Gee Street, Barwon Avenue and Cranbourne Avenue will be closed at times to allow safe access to work zones
- The works are expected to generate moderate levels of noise, dust and vibration
- Minor vegetation removal and tree trimming will take place near work areas, where required. We will make every effort to protect native vegetation, where possible. Before being removed, vegetation is inspected for the presence of wildlife, and qualified handlers will be on site to safely rehome wildlife if needed
