Melbourne Airport Rail Stage 1: West Footscray to Albion Rail Upgrade
We are delivering stage one of Melbourne Airport Rail with the Australian and Victorian governments investing more than $4 billion to deliver 6kms of major rail upgrades from West Footscray to Albion. These works will include transforming the Sunshine Station into a superhub and building new modern and accessible stations at Tottenham and Albion.
In late May and June, utility service relocations will continue in the Sunshine Station precinct and surrounds.
What we're doing
- Boring to relocate underground telecommunications and water services.
- Conduct utility service investigations.
- Excavating to relocate underground water services.
- Start installing in-ground protection for the new jet fuel pipeline on the shared-use path north of Sunshine Station.
What to expect
- Work crews, machinery and construction vehicles (including trucks) in the area.
- Low to high levels of construction noise at various time, as well as dust and vibration.
- Lighting in place when we work at night.
When we'll work
Standard working hours
- Monday to Friday, 7am to 6pm
- Saturdays, 7am to 1pm
Night works
We will undertake the following night works in Sunshine:
- 7pm to 5am, Monday 18 and Tuesday 19 May – underground service investigations in the station car park (off Sun Crescent).
- 7pm to 5am, Saturday 23 May – service investigations in the rail corridor north and south of Sunshine Station while trains aren’t running.
- 7pm to 5am, Wednesday 27 May to Saturday 30 May – underground service investigations on City Place and in the station car park (off Sun Crescent).
- Working 24/7 from Wednesday 27 May to Friday 5 June – boring to relocate underground telecommunications services, in the precinct around Sunshine Station.
- 7pm to 5am, Friday 5 June to Sunday 7 June – service investigations in the rail corridor between Albion and Tottenham stations while trains aren’t running.
Changes to the way you travel
Road
- Shared use path/underpass beneath Hampshire Road closed from 7am, Wednesday 20 May to September 2026. Please follow the signed detour – cyclists will need to dismount.
- Shared use path between Sunshine Station and Harvester Road will be closed for up to 5 days between Monday 25 May and 6pm Friday 5 June. Please follow the signed detour – cyclists will need to dismount.
- Westbound lane on City Place closed 7pm to 5am each night from Wednesday 27 to Saturday 30 May. Detour in place via the station car park and Sun Crescent. Please follow the detour. Up to 6 on-street car parking bays will be closed during these works.
- Laneway north of City Place, off Sun Crescent closed for up to 4 days in early June. There will be no parking in the laneway or private car parks during this time. The project team is working directly with impacted businesses about this closure. Pedestrian access through the laneway will be maintained and rubbish collections will not be affected.
Bus
- Sun Crescent bus stop no. 456 that is located near the corner of City Place, will relocate around 70m to the north, starting from first service Monday 1 June to December 2026.
Car parking
- Up to 30 car spaces closed at Sunshine Station car park (off Sun Crescent) from 7pm to 5am each night, Wednesday 27 to Saturday 30 May.
- 4 car parks on Sun Crescent will close to accommodate for the relocated 456 bus stop from 7am, Friday 29 May to December 2026.
