We are delivering stage 1 of Melbourne Airport Rail, with the Australian and Victorian governments investing more than $4 billion to deliver 6km of major rail upgrades from West Footscray to Albion. The works will include transforming Sunshine into a transport superhub and building new modern and accessible stations at Tottenham and Albion.
Throughout July and August, we’ll continue site establishment and early works near Tottenham Station, complete site investigations near the rail line in Tottenham and continue works to remove vegetation from the rail corridor.
What we’re doing
- Continuing to establish site facilities within the Tottenham Station temporary rail passenger car park on Rupert Street and in the existing Metro Tunnel Project site compound off Ashley Street.
- Delivery and installation of site offices at Rupert Street and Ashley Street using oversized vehicles Installing fencing, lighting and CCTV at each compound.
- Site compound ground preparation works, including levelling for crushed rock placement.
- Site investigations near Tottenham Station and in the rail corridor near Tottenham to locate underground services and survey conditions through the area.
- Starting to establish a laydown (material storage) area next to the temporary car park on Rupert Street.
- Continuing works to remove vegetation from the rail corridor between Tottenham and Sunshine stations and near site compounds on Ashley and Rupert streets.
What to expect
- Work crews, machinery and construction vehicles including trucks and oversized vehicles in the area.
- Low to medium levels of construction noise at various times.
- Changed traffic conditions.
When we’ll work
Standard working hours
- Monday to Friday, 7am to 6pm
- Saturdays 7am to 1pm
You may see work crews and construction vehicles commencing set up from 6am on weekdays and 7am on Saturdays. When night works are required, we’ll inform you in advance.
Changes to the way you travel
Road
Ashley Street, West Footscray/Braybrook
- Changed traffic conditions between Sunshine Road and Rupert Street, including reduced speeds in July and August.
- Pedestrian and vehicle access maintained.
Rupert Street, West Footscray
- Lane closures at times between Harley Avenue to First Street, 7am to 5pm each day until late 2027.
Sunshine Road, Tottenham
- Changed traffic conditions at times between Central Avenue to Sara Grove, including speed reductions and single lane closed eastbound near the level crossing, 9:30am to 3:30pm each day from Tuesday 4 August to Sunday 9 August.
- Additional lane closures may be required at times in August – check our disruptions map for the latest information.
Car parking
- Approximately 120 car spaces closed in the Tottenham Station temporary car park from July 2026.
We’ll make every effort to complete these works on schedule, however dates are subject to change. For your safety, please follow signage and traffic management in place.
