We are delivering stage 1 of Melbourne Airport Rail, with the Australian and Victorian governments investing more than $4 billion to deliver 6km of major rail upgrades from West Footscray to Albion. The works will include transforming Sunshine into a transport superhub and building new modern and accessible stations at Tottenham and Albion.

During September, we’ll continue site establishment works near Tottenham Station and start preparing for the next stage of construction. This includes removing old infrastructure from the rail corridor and drilling to prepare the ground for the new pedestrian underpass at Tottenham Station.

What we’re doing

  • Starting sheet piling works near Ashley Street during the day in preparation for building the new underpass at Tottenham Station
  • Removing redundant tracks and associated rail infrastructure in the rail corridor
  • Removing some trees and vegetation on the rail side of Rupert Street between First Street and Ashley Street
  • Installing rail safety fencing along the rail corridor between Tottenham and Sunshine stations during the day and at night when trains aren’t running
  • Continuing ground preparation, including levelling and placing crushed rock
  • Continuing site establishment activities within the Ashley Street compound
  • Establishing a laydown area next to the temporary car park on Rupert Street for material storage
  • Delivering and removing materials, machinery and equipment using trucks and oversized vehicles
  • Site investigations near Tottenham Station and in the rail corridor near Tottenham to locate underground services and survey conditions through the area.

What to expect

  • Changed conditions to the walking and cycling path on Rupert Street. Please refer to signage and follow traffic management directions
  • Low to medium levels of construction noise and vibrations for short periods at times
  • Increased numbers of workers, machinery, trucks and oversized vehicles in the area
  • Changed traffic conditions with traffic management including reduced speeds and intermittent lane closures
  • Traffic management in place, including temporary changes for motorists, cyclists and pedestrians at times
  • Lighting used to safely support night works within the rail corridor
  • Moderate localised vibration near sheet piling activities.
