We are delivering stage 1 of Melbourne Airport Rail, with the Australian and Victorian governments investing more than $4 billion to deliver 6km of major rail upgrades from West Footscray to Albion. The works will include transforming Sunshine into a transport superhub and building new modern and accessible stations at Tottenham and Albion.

As part of delivering these major rail upgrades, we’re also upgrading rail signalling and services in sections of the Brooklyn freight rail corridor between Tottenham and Newport to improve safety and reliability of the network.

These upgrades will involve replacing service cables next to the tracks and digging under the tracks to install cables at some locations in the corridor. Works are expected to begin in mid 2027 and will be completed as part of Melbourne Airport Rail Stage 1 in 2030.

As we prepare for these upgrades, until September 2026, we’ll complete site investigations near the rail corridor in Brooklyn and South Kingsville.

What we’re doing

• Site investigations in the rail corridor at Brooklyn and South Kingsville to locate underground services and survey conditions through the area, using non-destructive digging (NDD) at times.

What to expect

• Work crews, machinery and construction vehicles including trucks and oversized vehicles in the area.
• Low levels of construction noise at times.
• Speed reductions and traffic management.

When we’ll work

Standard working hours

• Monday to Friday, 7am to 6pm
• Saturdays 7am to 1pm

You may see work crews and construction vehicles commencing set up from 6am on weekdays and 7am on Saturdays. When night works are required, we’ll inform you in advance.

Changes to the way you travel

Road

Somerville Road, Brooklyn 

• Single lane closed eastbound, between Market and Alick roads at times from 9:30 to 3:30pm, late August to early September.
• Pedestrian and vehicle access maintained.

Geelong Road Service Road, Brooklyn

• Speed reduced near the rail corridor at times each day from 7am to 5pm, in August.

Francis Street, Brooklyn level crossing

• Speed reduced between Export Drive and Richards Street at times  each day from 7am to 5pm, in August.

Kernot Street level crossing, South Kingsville

• Changed traffic conditions including speed reduced and, traffic and pedestrian stoppages between Montgomery Crescent, Spotswood and Moresby Street, South Kingsville at times each day from 7am to 5pm, in August.

We’ll make every effort to complete these works on schedule, however dates are subject to change. For your safety, please follow signage and traffic management in place. Check our disruptions map for the latest information.
