We are delivering stage 1 of Melbourne Airport Rail, with the Australian and Victorian governments investing more than $4 billion to deliver 6km of major rail upgrades from West Footscray to Albion. The works will include transforming Sunshine into a transport superhub and building new modern and accessible stations at Tottenham and Albion.

We're upgrading rail signals and services in sections of the freight rail corridor between Tottenham and Newport. During November and December, we'll carry out site investigations to better understand existing ground conditions and identify underground services.

What we’re doing

We’ll carry out site investigations in the rail corridor near Brooklyn and South Kingsville to locate underground services and test ground conditions. At times, this will involve high-pressure water-based non-destructive digging.

What to expect

  • An increase in workers, machinery and construction vehicles, including trucks and oversized vehicles in the area.
  • Noise from construction machinery and heavy vehicles.
  • Temporary traffic management, intermittent lane closures and reduced speeds at some locations to safely complete works.
  • Survey markings on roads, footpaths and nearby infrastructure.

When we’ll work

Our standard work hours are Monday to Friday, 7am to 6pm, and Saturdays 7am to 5pm. You may see work crews and construction vehicles starting to set up from 6am on weekdays and 7am on Saturdays. When night works are required, we’ll inform you in advance.

We’ll make every effort to complete these works on time, however dates are subject to change.

Changes to the way you travel

Speed reductions in place off-peak 9.30am to 3.30pm when required Monday to Friday until late December on:

  • Somerville Road, Brooklyn (Market Road to Alick Road)
  • Geelong Road Service Road, Brookly (localised near the rail corridor)
  • Francis Street, Brooklyn level crossing (Export Drive to Richards Street)
  • Kernot Street level crossing, Montgomery Crescent and Vernon St, South Kingsville
